Xbox Puts Affordability and Efficiency at the Center of Next-Gen Console
Xbox boss Asha Sharma says Microsoft’s next-generation console, codenamed Project Helix, is being designed around “efficiency and affordability alongside performance,” a direct response to rising hardware and component costs and to the industry’s rapid adoption of AI. In an interview with the BBC published 27 sierpnia 2026, Sharma framed affordability as a problem the whole business now has to solve.
“All of the industry needs to start to innovate on affordability and efficiency,” Sharma told the BBC. “That is something that we have not had to do [previously].”
She tied the shift to what she described as a “crisis that’s currently happening in hardware and components,” and said it should change how console makers think about giving players “more choice in terms of how they play their console and how they purchase their console.” For Project Helix specifically, that means engineering around “hardware efficiency in terms of how you use storage and memory, the kind of price per unit, the components, things like that.”
What Sharma Said About Physical Media, AI, and the State of Xbox
Sharma declined to say whether Project Helix will include a disc drive, but she leaned hard on the idea of player choice, pointing to Xbox’s newly announced disc-to-digital feature, which lets players register a digital entitlement for a physical game they own. “I know players love physical media, and I know there’s a lot of benefits in digital media, and I want to make sure people have a choice,” she said. “We’ve long pioneered backwards compatibility, and so you’ll continue to see that as we go forward in the generations.”
On AI, Sharma, who was previously president of Microsoft’s CoreAI division, said the technology is “fundamentally changing a lot of things,” and that the platform will “take into consideration what’s happening in the world and build the best experience for our players.” She reiterated Xbox’s stated line that it has “no tolerance for bad AI” and would not “flood our ecosystem with soulless AI slop,” adding that “games are and always will be art, crafted by humans.” Xbox chief content officer Matt Booty, in the same interview, said the platform faces “no pressure from Microsoft” to use AI, and that teams are free to use it where it helps the production pipeline, such as writing code or checking for bugs.
Sharma also addressed Xbox’s recent restructuring, which cut 3,200 roles, roughly 20% of the Xbox organization, and divested five internal studios. She said it was done “to ensure we are here for the next 25 years,” and conceded that “within Xbox, we haven’t been healthy.”
The Disc-to-Digital Feature Sharma Pointed To
The feature Sharma referenced is real and dated. Xbox detailed it in an Xbox Wire post on 26 sierpnia 2026, written by Jason Ronald, VP Next Generation. Xbox Insiders begin testing it on 31 sierpnia 2026. Inserting a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc and launching the game claims a digital entitlement, after which the game gains Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming access where supported, while the physical disc keeps working as before. Xbox says it is starting with thousands of titles and will add more over time, and frames the feature as part of its broader game-preservation commitment.
That post matters to the next-gen story for one reason: it is the clearest concrete expression yet of the “choice” philosophy Sharma described.
Why Affordability Is the Headline
Sharma framed the shift as a response to what she called a “crisis that’s currently happening in hardware and components.” She is describing a market where memory, storage, and component costs are rising rather than falling, and where the answer is to engineer for efficiency and to decouple what players pay from how they play, rather than to chase a single premium box.
The competitive backdrop sharpens that. Gaming.net reported this week that 2026 console revenue would be flat year-on-year without Grand Theft Auto 6, a data point that underlines how little room the hardware market has to absorb higher prices. And the disc-to-digital move lands just as Xbox begins Insider testing of the feature on August 31, signaling the ecosystem plumbing for a next-gen launch is being laid now.
What Happens Next
The dated observable is the disc-to-digital rollout: Xbox Insiders start testing on 31 sierpnia 2026, with a broader release to follow. Beyond that, Sharma gave no Project Helix reveal date, price, or spec sheet, and was explicit that the disc-drive question is unanswered. The next concrete milestones are Xbox’s own: how the efficiency-and-affordability brief translates into actual hardware, and whether the component-cost pressure Sharma described shows up in the price players are ultimately asked to pay.
