The Sims is a better contender for the best life simulation game than Paralives. It has way more content that enriches its world, the activities you can do, the people you interact with, and a myriad of different ways your days can turn out. Part of it is because of the many years that The Sims has been around. It has been receiving so many updates and expansion packs that add more backstories and lore.

Paralives, meanwhile, is still in its Early Access phase of development. Yet, even at this early stage, it’s showing great promise, particularly in its building systems. You can build houses with more flexibility compared to The Sims, with no limitations on how high your walls are or whether they form curves. You have a grid-free building system that allows you to reposition objects and even resize them.

Given that there are more updates to come, who knows, perhaps the Paralives Vs The Sims debate might get more exciting to settle on.

What is Paralives?

Paralives is an upcoming life simulation game. It’s out now in Early Access on Steam. However, the developers are actively adding more features to the game. But essentially, your main role is to build a house for your Parafolk. Onward, you control and manage their lives inside the house, and outside, whether they’re running errands, meeting up with friends, going to work, and more generally running their day-to-day lives.

What is The Sims?

The Sims is also a life simulation game. So far, there have been four main games in the series. However, you can check out lots of other spin-offs, varied takes on mobile, and expansion packs for the main games. The first game launched in 2000, and the latest in 2014. So, quite a long time since we’ve had a fresh update. Still, the series remains the leading life simulation game, with a decent bunch of modern titles looking to oust it from its crown, including Paralives.

Features

Paralives Vs The Sims

Paralives is a single-player game without a dedicated story campaign. However, that doesn’t mean that you won’t create short stories for the characters you control and meet. You’re essentially in control of writing the stories of your chosen characters. However, the game can throw you curveballs to adapt to.

The storytelling begins at the character creation tool. It’s pretty decent, allowing you to choose the height, outfits, personalities, and smaller details like talents and tattoos for your characters. You then enter an open-world town, where you build your house, and can go out to explore shops, parks, museums, and more.

You can get a job, funneling your character’s time into developing certain skills. There’s a romance and friendship feature, which has an exciting option to make enemies as well.

Your Parafolk grow up, they can have kids, and attend events. These develop their skills, traits, needs, and emotions. And thus, your stories in Paralives bloom.

For The Sims, I’ll assess the latest The Sims 4, which has up-to-date features. Similarly, you won’t find a dedicated story campaign. Instead, you create your Sims. The character creation tool is a lot more complex. It even includes a personality test that creates Sims that could be real-life people.

As much as you have the freedom to write your own stories, determining your Sims’ day-to-day lives, The Sims 4 also provides backstories you can hitchhike on. It can give you fun scenarios to navigate as your customized Sim. You might be on the verge of breaking up with a lover. You might have limited funds and need to explore ways to multiply your income.

Gameplay

Paralives Vs The Sims

The world of The Sims 4 is also more developed, not just in the places you can visit and the diverse environments you can set up fun adventures, but also in the already ongoing stories and lives that you can meet. You’ll meet other Sims whose lives are complex. You’ll discover rich lore that makes the world in The Sims 4 feel alive.

This is the gameplay that sets The Sims 4 apart from Paralives and other life simulation games. Though I have to keep in mind that Paralives is still in Early Access.

At the moment, you can explore an open-world town in Paralives. You can create and customize Parafolks, find them jobs, unlock their unique traits, and make friends and lovers. Group activities are also accessible, with the freedom to choose who you’d like to participate.

You can build houses, too, with a decent building tool that lets you structure walls, layouts, and interior decor. One exciting feature is modding, allowing for editing, adding content, and exploring community-made mods through the Steam Workshop.

Building houses is where Paralives sets itself apart from The Sims 4. The way you can build without the restrictions of a grid layout, forming fun angles, tall walls, and curved ones. You can explore a wider range of colors and textures. You can even resize objects, whether upwards or sideways. Paralives wins when it comes to building flexibly.

Customization

Otherwise, The Sims 4 has way more customizable content than Paralives. From the Sims’ looks and behavior, to their houses, although with some restrictiveness, to creating stories that are further enriched by other Sims you run into, diverse environments you discover, and a living, breathing world that reacts to your every move.

Verdict: Paralives Vs The Sims

It’s certainly an advantage for The Sims 4, being free-to-play. Also, the fact that it’s been around for a while and has been receiving lots of updates and expansion packs. Meanwhile, Paralives is still in Early Access, with more features still to come.

As is, Paralives has more flexible building working in its favor. In all other areas, though, The Sims 4 is bigger and better. It has more customizable content, with rich lore and so many backstories to infiltrate and manipulate.

The full version of Paralives will have pets, cars, houseboats, and a town creation tool. It’ll also add more content, including town activities and social interactions. But will it be enough to oust The Sims from its life simulation throne?
