Champion select becomes much easier to follow when you stop asking only whether a champion is strong and start asking what job it has. Who begins the fight? Who needs time? Who makes the opponent’s carry uncomfortable?

These ten concepts help you read that plan during Worlds or another professional series. Jump to win conditions, flex picks, or selection rules. For what happens after the draft, see our viewing guide beyond the kill score.

10. Find the Composition’s Win Condition

Ask what a successful game would look like for these five champions. A lineup might want coordinated fights around objectives, pressure in separate lanes, or enough time for a carry to become difficult to handle.

That gives you a reason to watch the quiet moments. Giving up space or avoiding a fight can support the plan rather than signal confusion. Keep the reading flexible as gold, items, and execution change what each team can accomplish.

9. Identify Who Can Start the Fight

Find the champion or combination that can force an engagement. Then look for the tools that protect the damage dealers if the other side acts first. Starting a fight and surviving one are connected jobs, but they are not the same job.

A durable champion is not automatically a reliable initiator. Watch which abilities actually create the opening and whether teammates can follow them. An important cooldown being unavailable can explain why a team suddenly becomes much less willing to contest space.

8. Check Where the Damage Comes From

Look at the mix of physical and magic damage, along with how the lineup delivers it. If most of the threat comes from one type, the opponent may have more straightforward defensive purchases.

Then ask whether that damage can reach its targets. Range, protection, and the shape of a fight matter as much as the labels. A carry who spends the encounter escaping cannot deliver the damage that made the composition attractive on paper.

7. Look for Lanes That Can Move First

A favorable lane can create time to push a wave and move before the opponent. That freedom may help a jungler contest an area or let teammates reach an objective earlier.

Priority is a changing situation. Health, cooldowns, wave position, and jungle pressure all affect who can leave safely. When the broadcast predicts a strong matchup, watch how the team uses the opportunity rather than assuming the champion selection automatically supplies control.

6. Ask When the Lineup Wants to Be Strong

Some compositions become easier to use after particular levels or item purchases. Others want to turn earlier strength into a lead before the opponent reaches that point.

Treat scaling as a plan with conditions. A team still has to collect resources and reach the fights its carries want. Range, terrain, and initiation can remain decisive later, so a broad claim that one side “wins late” should begin the explanation rather than finish it.

5. Keep a Flex Pick’s Role Open

A credible flex pick can go to more than one position, which delays the information the opponent needs for a comfortable response. Watch the later selections for the moment that uncertainty disappears.

The option has to be plausible for this roster. A champion being theoretically playable in several roles does not mean every player will take it there. The value is making the opponent answer a real possibility, not an imaginary one.

4. Put a Counterpick Back Into the Team

A counterpick can improve a lane or interfere with something the opponent wants to do. Once you see that advantage, ask what the champion contributes when the lane ends.

It still needs a role in objective setups, side-lane play, or team fights. This explains why a team may decline an obvious individual counter in favor of a champion that keeps the wider composition useful. Winning one matchup is helpful; it is not the entire draft.

3. Find Abilities That Support the Same Action

Crowd control can hold someone for follow-up damage. Protection can give a carry time to attack. Look for combinations that turn several champions’ tools into one understandable play.

Also notice competing needs. Several strong picks can all want the same resources or prefer different fights. A good composition gives its strengths a practical way to work together, so watch who enables whom rather than simply counting impressive champion names.

2. Read Bans Alongside the Picks They Protect

A ban may remove a powerful option, target a player’s comfort, or make a planned selection safer. Its purpose often becomes clearer after more champions appear.

Connect the removal with something visible in the draft. Unless the team explains its reasoning, keep the motive as an interpretation. “This leaves a safer matchup for the later pick” is a useful observation; pretending to know the team’s entire practice week is not.

1. Separate Map Side From Draft Order

Riot’s 2026 First Selection change lets the entitled team choose either blue-versus-red side or first-versus-second draft order. Its opponent chooses the remaining option. Blue side should therefore not be treated as an automatic synonym for first pick.

Read the event’s current selection and champion-reuse rules before interpreting the advantage. A format used at a different tournament may not apply. Knowing what each team was actually allowed to choose makes the draft easier to follow from the first decision.

When the final champion locks in, describe the kind of game each side wants. Then watch the lanes, movements, and objectives for signs that the plan is working. A draft becomes much more interesting when you can recognize the fight a team has been trying to create.
