Cozy Marbles レビュー (PC)
If you, like me, grew up in the nineties, then you more than likely have fond memories of fooling around with marbles. Specifically, the act of building marble runs out of video tapes, broken strainers, and the spines of various hardback books. Well, as it turns out, Cozy Marbles vies to bring some of that childhood nostalgia back to the centerfold, not as a simple tribute to the nineties, but as a fully-fledged sandbox game in which you, the ball-hoarding builder, can create your own tracks and defy logic.
Courtesy of its intuitive design tools and easy-to-grasp sandbox mechanics, Cozy Marbles quickly establishes itself as a beginner-friendly build-’em-up experience that, although severely lacking in extensive plot points or challenges, has the creative spirit and the capacity to inspire the target demographic. Structurally, it strives to deliver a clean, simple, and elegant marble suite with which you can adopt, experiment with, and ultimately use to craft complex courses that can safely satisfy the senses. Cozy Marbles is just that. It’s a spot where you can fool around with contraptions, flaunt your creative wizardry, and transform your paper-based idea into a fully operational track. It doesn’t need to be beautiful. If it rolls, it rolls.

A sandbox game at its core, Cozy Marbles doesn’t force a habit of keeping all of its best materials behind a paywall. Instead, it chooses to line your pockets with wooden blocks, rails and metallic loops, and present you with the opportunity to make something of your wildest blueprints. While there might not be much of a point to any of it, it does make for a satisfying experience that, when assembled correctly, exhumes a sense of catharsis and pulls on all of the right strings.
As luck would have it, you don’t need to be well-versed in the art of marble run construction to chuck a few building blocks together in Cozy Marbles. Unlike Planet Coaster or, for argument’s sake, any other convoluted sandbox sim, for that matter, the game promotes freedom of choice and flexibility. It doesn’t tell you that you need to fulfill various requirements in order to progress to the next stage, but instead grants you the freedom to craft at your own pace. Frankly, it doesn’t matter if the run is incomplete or if the ball lacks the trajectory to flow through the hoops. If it works for you, then you’re probably doing it right.

While there are several miniature challenges for you to take on in Cozy Marbles, the game itself is mostly dependent on its freeform-oriented sandbox mode—a canvas with which you can use to create courses out of metal, plastic and wood. With hundreds of pieces at your fingertips, you can fashion obstacle courses with vertical drops, tight curves, launch pads, and, if you’re feeling ambitious, cannons. Again, it doesn’t matter if the marble falls flat and the track lacks the support to hold the weight for the duration of the run. There are no rules, and there are no consequences. It is, quite simply, a game that encourages freedom and rewards creativity.
Set against the backdrop of a warm room, a fairytale village, as well as a futuristic space station, the game embraces its coziness as an elegant workspace that’s as equally inviting as it is creatively appealing. With multiple themes to toy around with and a gentle tone to envelope each canvas, Cozy Marbles, really, just feels like a pleasant place to call home for a handful of hours. Although it might lack a proper challenge, a complete campaign, and a true sense of purpose, it is a genuine delight to watch unfold from the comfort of your front room.

The building aspect of Cozy Marbles is arguably its greatest contribution to the “cozy” field. With as little as a grid, a catalog of set pieces, and a select-and-snap tool to frame its idyllic landscape, the game allows you to assemble tracks at the touch of a button. Clearly, it aims to provide an accessible experience that can both appeal to younger players and those who favor a more complex challenge. But, as I said, you don’t need to be all that great at building to reap the fruits of your labor. If the marble rolls to the checkered flag — great. Though, it makes no difference whether it does or not, as the joy mostly comes from fumbling around with the pieces and seeing what works and what doesn’t.
Building aside, Cozy Marbles harbors a couple of nifty features for avid crafters to enjoy. For example, you can export your courses, share your creations with the world, and even slip into public sandboxes to learn other designs, races, and traps. It also offers you the freedom to stream your own content, too. And that’s a great thing here, as it enhances the viewer experience. Say, if you create a marble race and fill it with a bunch of checkpoints, then you can, in theory, invite your audience to place bets. That’s a simple example — but you get the point.
All in all Cozy Marbles is a brilliant sandbox game that, while still light on padding and plot elements, can quite easily keep you engaged for a lot longer than your average build-‘em-up chapter. As a nineties kid, I get it. Before social media and the sudden surge in demand for app-riddled phones, marbles were the one thing that helped shape mid-summer afternoons and cure brief spells of boredom. In this case, if you’re as sentimental as me, then you’ll probably enjoy Cozy Marbles a lot more than the average sandbox game. Oh, and did I mention that you can also puts hats on your marbles? There’s an extra point, right there.
Verdict

Cozy Marbles finds its rhythm as a conceptually simple love letter to the nineties—to the afternoon delights and family-oriented pastimes that once held a permanent place in every home across the globe. As much of an open book as it may seem, the game itself delivers a deeply satisfying, creatively engaging sandbox experience that foots the bill incredibly well, with enough track pieces, cannons, and vertical slides to inspire the marble movement and give avid crafters something to write home about. Sometimes, that’s all that you need: a marble, a cannon, and an opportunity to hit start.
