Woodo Testbericht (Xbox Series X|S, Switch & PC)
Woodo is like a warm blanket on a cold autumn night: comforting, inviting, and strongly reminiscent of your jolliest childhood memories. Really, it’s everything that you need and want from a cozy diorama puzzler. It’s a project that makes you feel at peace with your imagination, no matter how bizarre or as unorthodox as it may seem. Although wooden by design, its heart is as soft as water, as is its wholesome composition and its ability to weave a beautiful story from the fabric of a meticulously crafted world of interactive wonders. It is, quite simply, a game that instills a warm feeling that lingers in the heart long after the final piece of the puzzle aligns itself with the frame.
There are plenty of things to be celebrated in a game like Woodo, its design being one of them, naturally. As conceptually simple as it is—to sift through a whole bunch of items and to slot them into a scene—Woodo has a tremendous amount of moving parts that transcend a boring theme. It isn’t just about slotting component A into socket B, but about enjoying the little things that radiate warmth, summer bliss, and a type of coziness that you could only find in an endless summer as a child.
Where you would typically expect to find the odd gadget or gizmo to poke at in a diorama-based puzzle game, Woodo chooses to give each and every object a role in its world. And, to be honest, that’s half of the fun in a game like this: prodding things to see how they will react to your touch. Everything jiggles, and more often than not, most of what you interact with is a carrier for another underlying puzzle. Even when the task is paper thin, or is as simple as adding a second slice of bread to a sandwich on a table, the diorama ensures that you have so, so much more to play around with. And that’s where its heart lies: in a creative space where ordinary objects thrive at the touch of a button.

Woodo is, first and foremost, an adorable three-dimensional puzzle game that carefully draws its inspiration from childhood memories and the “little things” that made them special. Paired with a frog, a fox, and the warm tone of a narrator’s voice, the game invites you to trundle through a series of wooden dioramas, each of which are woven into a wholesome fantasy of clickable set pieces, eccentric characters and warm themes that gracefully tickle the soul and hit all of the right chords. As the curator of these memories, it falls to you to construct the diorama and follow along with the two friends as they bask in their perfect summer.
Of course, this isn’t like your usual puzzle box; it isn’t strewn with complex mechanisms or sliding panels for you to mindlessly fumble around with for hours on end, but rather, vast interactive layers that, once activated, unlock a separate piece of the world for you to marvel at. Simply clicking or dragging an item to its correct location unveils a new portion of the diorama, and as a result it adds a new splash of color to the scene. The little jigsaw pieces fall into place, and you, as the overseer of these beautifully crafted canvases, take it upon yourself to curate a story that looks and feels a little more like a home away from home with each passing moment.

On paper, Woodo sounds like a simple game, as does it sound like an entry-level experience that would be far better suited for younger players. But that isn’t the case here. Sure, it’s a simple game with a particularly small learning curve, but it’s also a game that touches on a lot of the key elements of a universal experience. Building each diorama is an absolute joy in itself, as is the act of highlighting each of its bits and pieces to witness small but oh-so-adorable events slowly unfold. Combined with a vibrant wooden aesthetic, soothing ASMR-like sound effects and a host of charming characters, it truly stands out as a brilliant piece of art that can (and probably will) make you smile from ear to ear from beginning to end.
It’s easy to see how much heart and soul went into the development of Woodo. In any other case, you could argue that things feel, I don’t know, rushed and out of place. Woodo, however, tells a different story, given that almost everything that you interact with has a purpose, either as a small notch on the belt, or as a significant cog on a much, much bigger wheel. The point is, Woodo feels like a complete game. While still technically short and without a grand-scale campaign, it pours a great deal of energy into finessing each and every component in its arsenal. It looks good, it sounds good, and more importantly, it feels good to play. Honestly, that’s a rarity in this day and age.

As I said, there’s a beautiful game here that checks all of the right boxes. Unlike your traditional hidden object game, it actively chooses to add multiple layers to each and every pawn on the board. Rather than it having you swiftly allocate each set piece and power through to the next level, it prefers to keep you at bay, and to give you enough freedom to enjoy its natural habitat in a safe and secure environment. To call it a masterpiece might be a bit of a stretch, but to tell you the truth, it does accommodate the elements of a true work of art. It’s peaceful, idyllic, and above all, an absolute pleasure to sit down with for a while. What more could you want from a puzzle game?
Verdict

Woodo delivers everything you could possibly want and more from a cozy puzzler, with a no-strings-attached diorama of wondrous details and interactive objects, ASMR-oriented sound effects and a familiar but oh-so-adorable cast of doughy characters. Paired with a treasure trove of meticulously crafted canvases, themes and memories, it truly stands out as a brilliant, albeit rather short experience that will appeal to both die-hard puzzle fans and cozy enthusiasts alike.
