Massive Entertainment Name Now Covers Four Ubisoft Development Studios
Ubisoft renamed its Creative House 2 business unit as Massive Entertainment on 30. september 2026, extending the Swedish studio’s brand across the teams behind Tom Clancy’s The Division, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, and new original IP including March of Giants.
Development teams responsible for those franchises in Montréal, Paris, Sweden, and Toronto began operating under the Massive Entertainment brand the same day. Ubisoft said the shared identity brings together the teams’ creative and technology expertise to shape the brand’s future, grow its franchises, and craft challenging experiences for dedicated player communities.
Massive Entertainment remains part of Ubisoft, which publishes and distributes all games developed under the brand. Ubisoft said there is no change to ongoing commitments for players or partners.
The publisher said the Massive Entertainment brand builds on a nearly three-decade legacy established in Sweden through its games and technology.
“Massive Entertainment has always been defined by passion, ambition and incredible talent, and our focus now is on what comes next,” said Christoph Hartmann, General Manager of Massive Entertainment. “Bringing our teams together under one identity gives us the opportunity to combine the creative energy and expertise across Montréal, Paris, Sweden and Toronto to shape the next generation of these iconic franchises, create new games and IPs, and push our craft and technology forward.”
Leadership Under Christoph Hartmann
The renaming follows Hartmann’s appointment as General Manager of Creative House 2, which Ubisoft announced on 1. juli 2026. His role is to oversee the strategic direction and development of the studios and brands under the unit.
Hartmann joined Ubisoft with more than 20 years of experience in the games industry. He is a co-founder and former President of 2K Games, held multiple roles at Take-Two Interactive, and led the teams behind Borderlands, BioShock, Sid Meier’s Civilization, NBA 2K, and XCOM, while supporting the Grand Theft Auto franchise in its early years. He was most recently Vice President at Amazon Games, a background Ubisoft said left him well placed to oversee the March of Giants team, which was recently acquired from Amazon.
In the July announcement, Ubisoft co-founder and CEO Yves Guillemot said: “His experience and management style are perfectly aligned with our ambitions for our new operating model, where exemplary GMs lead empowered, agile, and accountable Creative Houses.”
The Creative Houses Operating Model
Creative House 2 is one of five Creative Houses at the center of the structure Ubisoft revealed in 2026. Under the model, described in a 17. marts 2026 leadership announcement, development teams are organized into Creative Houses aligned around brands that share similar genres and player experiences, each with clear responsibility for the development and long-term growth of its brands. Supporting them is the Creative Network, a group of expert studios providing production capabilities and specialized expertise across projects.
Ubisoft defined Creative House 2 as focused on games offering competitive and cooperative battlefield-based gameplay experiences, covering The Division, Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell, and the then-recently acquired March of Giants.
The March announcement also named Julien Bares as General Manager of Creative Houses 3 and 5. Creative House 3 covers high-intensity live experiences including The Crew, For Honor, and Riders Republic, while Creative House 5 is dedicated to casual and mobile play with brands including Just Dance, Growtopia, and Hungry Shark. Thomas Andrén became General Manager of the Creative Network on 1. april 2026, and served as interim Managing Director of Massive Entertainment until a replacement was appointed.
The Studio Behind the Name
Massive began in 1997 and is based in Sweden, with studios in Malmö and Stockholm, according to the studio’s own history. It released Ground Control and World in Conflict and played a major role in Far Cry 3 and Assassin’s Creed Revelations before joining Ubisoft in 2008.
The studio released The Division in 2016, which it says became the fastest-selling game in Ubisoft history and the fastest-selling new franchise of that year. The Division 2 followed in 2018, along with its Warlords of New York expansion, and the studio says the franchise has attracted more than 40 million players worldwide. Massive released Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora in 2023 and Star Wars Outlaws in august 2024 in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games.
Massive’s Snowdrop engine has powered the Division franchise, Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, and South Park: The Fractured But Whole, and the studio is the home base of Ubisoft Connect, Ubisoft’s digital ecosystem and distribution platform.
On the Massive Entertainment website, the studio describes itself as a multinational team of around 600 people from more than 50 countries. Its featured games list includes The Division 2, Ghost Recon, and Splinter Cell as active titles and March of Giants as upcoming, alongside a technology portfolio spanning Snowdrop, Ubisoft Connect, and Ubisoft Scalar.
