IEM Cologne Expands Playoffs to Four Days at LANXESS Arena
ESL FACEIT Group announced on 1 жовтня 2026, from Cologne, Germany, that Intel Extreme Masters Cologne will return on August 4-15, 2027, with four days of playoffs at the LANXESS arena and a 360-degree stage used at the event for the first time. The company described the 2027 tournament as the biggest edition in the event’s history.
EFG said 24 of the world’s best Counter-Strike 2 teams will return to the Cathedral of Counter-Strike to compete for $1.25 million in Total Winnings, the coveted championship trophy, and what the company called a crucial point in the ESL Grand Slam race.
IEM Cologne is one of the ESL Pro Tour’s flagship Championship tournaments, and EFG said the 2027 edition will bring the highest level of CS2 competition to the city.
New Format for the 2027 Edition
For the first time outside of a Major, the competition will culminate in four days of playoffs at the LANXESS arena on August 12-15, 2027. The extended arena run had previously been reserved for Major editions of the tournament.
The four playoff days close out a tournament that opens on 4 серпня 2027. The best eight teams from the field will contest those playoffs in front of what the company said will be a packed arena crowd.
The playoffs will unfold on a 360-degree stage, used at the event for the first time, which EFG described as a new live setup for the Cathedral of Counter-Strike. The company presented the extended playoff run and the stage design together as an expanded arena experience.
Marc Winther, Director Esports Counter-Strike 2 at ESL FACEIT Group, addressed the expansion in the announcement.
“With four days of Playoffs at the LANXESS arena and the 360-degree stage design, we have an opportunity to deliver our most ambitious edition yet while staying true to what has made IEM Cologne such an important part of esports history for more than a decade,” Winther said.
The 2026 Cologne Major
The 2027 announcement follows what EFG called a historic, record-breaking 2026 edition. That tournament saw IEM Cologne host a Counter-Strike Major for the first time in a decade, and Team Falcons lifted the trophy in front of a sold-out LANXESS arena.
EFG said the 2026 competition broke the game’s all-time viewership records and became the most-watched Counter-Strike tournament of all time. The event surpassed 100 million hours watched and reached a peak viewership of 2.75 million, according to figures the company attributed to escharts.com.
Winther pointed back to the 2026 edition when describing what makes the tournament special.
“What happened in Cologne this year was remarkable, and it once again showed what makes IEM Cologne so special. It brings together the world’s best teams, fans from across the globe, an atmosphere unlike almost anywhere else in Counter-Strike, and a history that has made this tournament one of the game’s most iconic events,” Winther said.
Intel Extreme Masters was started in 2006 by Intel and ESL, and EFG describes it as the longest-running global professional esports tournament circuit in the world. The circuit features Counter-Strike 2 competition and is approaching two decades of history, a span the company said includes many record-breaking events in viewership and stadium attendance. EFG also describes IEM as widely considered one of the most prestigious and traditional esports tournaments in the world.
