When The Quarry came out, you had to compare it to the original Until Dawn because it set the standard for these types of games. And since few games have been able to be as psychologically terrifying as Until Dawn. It’s the setting that really stole the show. The mountain lodge had incredible falling snow and an oppressive atmosphere. The characters, while your typical annoying tropes in horror movies, grow to be people you really want to see succeed. And that’s because of the strong writing and dialogue. It was cheesy, sure, but also felt satirical. And the jump scares are present, and predictable at times, but they can really scare the living crap out of you. 

Choice-Based Narrative

Meanwhile, the choices are the star of the show that really put pressure on you to make the right decision in a split second. And you can see the impact in the characters’ personalities change and their relationships evolve, before the game funnels you to a tense but satisfying ending. The Quarry nails some of what Until Dawn did right, but unfortunately, not all the way. Instead of psychological horror, The Quarry leans more on blood and gore. It’s more violent with its terrifying bits, which would be a matter of personal preference. But then the writing is predictable, and the dialogue can be quite annoying. Despite featuring Hollywood stars, they barely get you on their side through some of the cheesy and awkward lines they say. Yet, you still want to root for them because the game has its tense moments.

Gameplay

Those tense moments are during decision-making. The Quarry could give you multiple paths you can take, and the pressure to pick the right one is felt. It also has a high replayability to try and see how many characters you could save the next time around, or vice versa. But the stakes never really feel as high as Until Dawn. And I get it, this article should compare The Quarry to Until Dawn 2. 

Well, Until Dawn 2 is still in development. While I presume the story structure will be similar to the first game, the setting has changed. You’ll be whisking off to Akishima Island. There, the gameplay will involve making touch choices. The trailer, for instance, teases choices like, “Should you follow the signal to help your missing friend, or take a detour across a rickety bridge to investigate a strangely lively bar?” You might pick the path that leads to discovering clues that help you, or the alternative path that helps you save your friend. But there’s no knowing what each path might bring until you actually live it and pay the consequences.

Verdict: The Quarry Vs Until Dawn 2

In the end, I can’t know just yet whether the choices you’ll make in Until Dawn 2 end up being impossible ones that give you sleepless nights. It’s the execution of the writing, how terrifying the threat lurking in the shadows ends up being, how fragile the relationships between the characters are, and just how much your choices add to the tension and horror you experience. From the first Until Dawn game, I can give Until Dawn 2 the benefit of the doubt and anticipate a more frightening, unforgettable horror experience. But the developing studio has changed hands from Supermassive Games to AdHoc Studio and Firesprite. So, who knows how that might affect how Until Dawn 2 turns out. 

What’s certain is that Until Dawn is the best interactive horror you can hope for. The Quarry follows closely, with a few issues with the weaker writing and lackluster scare factor. It has its moments of intrigue and a high replayability from its multiple story paths. But Until Dawn 2 has the opportunity to outperform both The Quarry and the first game, giving us the best interactive horror yet.
