Sports betting has been capturing the attention of entire North America over the last several years, to the point where many have been requesting its legalization. The people enjoy betting, of course, while a number of high-ranking officials see great potential in taxation — especially now, when the entire world — including the US — is trying to recover after several years of COVID-19, in addition to everything else that happened over the past few years.
However, the US has not regulated sports betting on a federal level, which basically means that each state has to do it on its own, which has led to rather diverse outcomes on a state-to-state level. Some states have banned all kinds of gambling and betting, although there are only two that have gone to such extremes — Hawaii and Utah. Others have legalized pretty much everything, hoping to profit off of it and ensure that their citizens would engage in betting and gambling under the safest possible conditions.
Most states, however, are somewhere in between, with sports betting, specifically, being either legalized, on its way to being legalized, or semi-legalized, meaning that it is often only allowed in tribal casinos and sportsbooks. Today, however, we were interested in seeing what the situation is like in Vermont.
Sports betting in Vermont
At the time of writing, the state of Vermont has not yet legalized sports betting, unfortunately. However, it might happen in the near future, as there have been attempts to submit bills that would eventually lead to its legalization. One example is a study bill from 2020, known as S 59, which was submitted by Sen. Michael Sirotkin. The bill proposed the creation of the Sports Betting Study Committee, and after being approved by the Senate, it reached the House.
The bill, as the name suggests, proposes studying various models of sports betting to decide whether introducing sports betting would be beneficial to the state. This was also only one of two bills submitted that year, while the other one was submitted by Sen Dick Spears, known as S 213. This bill proposed the legalization of mobile-only sports betting, similarly to what Tennessee has done.
Services offering mobile sports betting would have to pay a 10% tax, and it would have also changed the DFS tax to 10% instead of the current fixed fee of $5,000 per year. Unfortunately, the bill stalled after its first reading.
This was not the first attempt to regulate sports betting, however. One year before, in 2019, Rep. Thomas Burditt attempted to do it by introducing bill H 484. The goal was to legalize online and retail sports betting, but it never got off the ground. It was read for the first and last time in a House committee.
7 Best Vermont Sports Betting Sites
These are the current top gambling sites that offer sports betting to Vermont residents.
The first on our list is the Bovada sportsbook and casino, which emerged in 2011. For the first five years of operation, the platform held the Kahnawake Gambling Commission’s license, but in 2016, it decided to give up on it after the Commission went through a policy change that Bovada did not approve of. For the last six years, it has operated without a license, but that still did not affect its quality or performance.
Its sportsbook offers a variety of popular payment methods, and the ability to bet on all kinds of big sports franchises, such as the NBA, NFL, MLB, NCAA football, NCAA basketball, and NHL, among others. Apart from traditional currencies, it also accepts Bitcoin, and it features mobile availability. And, if bettors ever experience an issue or need any sort of help, they can contact customer support at any time via email, phone call, or live chat.
The second on the list is BetUS — a well-known and highly-reputable online sports betting platform for the North American market, although the platform’s reputation has been flawless ever since its foundation in 1994. The platform, which is a casino in addition to being a sportsbook, is the holder of a Curacao Gaming Commission’s license, it is privately held, and it is highly secure and reliable.
BetUS features multiple payment levels, including Visa, Mastercard, and multiple cryptocurrencies, like Bitcoin, Ethereum, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin, and alike. In terms of sports betting, the platform offers numerous options, including football, soccer, baseball, basketball, hockey, cycling, golf, boxing, tennis, and more. Plus, players can also make in-play bets, meaning that they can bet on the games while they are happening. It is also rich with welcome bonuses, promotions, and other benefits that make it highly desirable among bettors.
BetOnline is an online sportsbook that launched in 2004, and like our previous entries, it also offers a casino section with plenty of entertaining gaming titles. It is very user-friendly, starting with the fact that it offers a minimum deposit of $20, it features polite and capable customer support, and it is safe to use. It holds the Panama City license, and it features multiple secure payment methods, including Visa, Mastercard, Discover card, American Express, wire transfers, and even cryptocurrencies.
For those who make a minimum deposit of $55, the platform offers a generous welcome bonus, and those who use cryptocurrencies can also benefit from a number of promotions. In addition to regular, monotonous betting, there is also proposition betting that lets users bet on questions, such as which team will be the first to make the 3-point shot, and alike, just so make it more exciting.
Halfway down the list, we have Xbet, which is a platform known for a lot of things, from tight betting odds to excellent customer service and the ability to offer things for novices and professionals alike. Xbet offers a myriad of deposit options, fast payouts, multiple betting options, bonuses, and a lot more that makes it highly attractive to bettors all over Vermont.
The benefits of using this platform keep popping up, but in terms of flaws, it only has 3 eSports games, at least for the time being. But, there are plenty of regular sports, like MLB; NHL, WNBA, golf, soccer, tennis, MMA, boxing, NASCAR, F1, and many more options for new and experienced bettors.
In the fifth spot, we have BUSR, which stands for Bet US Racing. This is easily the best racebook for the US, and one of the leading sportsbooks, available across the country, with the only exceptions being New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Nevada. Luckily, Ohlahoma is not on the list.
There are numerous betting options on the platform, apart from horse races, such as MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL, MMA, NCAA, betting on live baseball, and more. The platform offers multiple bonuses, including a sign-up bonus, casino bonus, cash bonus, and referral bonus. It also has great customer service available around the clock available via phone call, live chat, or email.
The BUSR website has a lot to offer, and we have listed its features and offerings in our BUSR review. So, if you are thinking of using this platform for your online betting, definitely give it a read first.
Nearing the end of the list, we have MyBookie, which is among the most trusted platforms for online gambling. Like most sportsbooks, it also offers a casino section, but both offer top-notch betting opportunities, with the sportsbook also featuring live betting options. You can bet on a variety of major international sports like basketball, football, soccer, and alike, as well as cricket, rugby, and even politics and entertainment.
MyBookie features multiple bonuses, such as a 50% sign-up bonus, a 10% cash bonus, and a 150% Casino bonus. The minimum deposit for Visa and Mastercard is somewhat elevated, sitting at $45, but if you use cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum Litecoin, or XRP, the minimum is only $20. Other than that, the platform also has 24/7 customer service available via email, live chat, and even phone calls, so you can always reach out if there is a need.
The last on the list is SportsBetting.ag, which is actually a platform operated by BetOnline Group. The platform does not offer a great design, but don’t be deceived by that — it has been around for nearly two decades for a reason. It did experience financial issues in 2012, and BetOnline used this opportunity to take over. Ever since, the platform has been running smoothly, licensed by the Panama Gambling Control Board, and servicing US bettors with no issues.
It features multiple great betting opportunities, and a variety of payment methods, including crypto and fiat options alike, and it even has a casino section. In terms of available sports, there are all the popular ones, such as soccer, football, baseball, basketball, hockey, and even things like snooker, darts, and handball. A welcome bonus is also included, and so are numerous promotions for crypto users, and even a loyalty and VIP program.
The future of sports betting in Vermont
Obviously, there is some interest in sports betting in Vermont, and so it could become legal in years to come. The move likely depends heavily on the outcome of the study conducted by the Sports Betting Study Committee. However, there is reason to hope, as the general region of the country in which Vermont is based in is among the most active ones for sports betting in the United States. Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and alike are all filled with sportsbooks, and they have active mobile sports betting apps.
The study will focus on things like other studies and laws from surrounding states, particularly regarding legalization, taxation, regulations, and alike. Next, it will also look into different retail and mobile sports betting models that might be a good fit for Vermont itself, as well as the positives and negatives of each model in order to determine the most beneficial one.
The study will also look into any potential limitations and/or restrictions that should be in place, such as restricting in-state college betting. Finally, it will look into what impacts sports betting might have on different socioeconomic and demographic groups.
When can online sports betting be expected in Vermont?
At this time, nobody can answer this question with any certainty. While there is demand for sports betting, it doesn’t mean that it will be legalized, and even if it does — there is no guarantee that it will include online sports betting. Some states have treated online and retail sports betting as a package, but others have made them into completely separate things, and as such, they split them up and legalized one but not the other.
It is also worth noting that Vermont is not a particularly gambling-friendly state. It is certainly not unfriendly, but the only legalized forms of gambling include the lottery and charitable gaming, such as casino nights and bingo. With that said, online sports betting is a fair possibility unless if the lottery wishes to operate sports betting itself through retail locations.
Online sports betting is simply more convenient, but it will have to be done through sportsbooks if the lottery doesn’t want them.
In fact, there are already some sportsbooks available in Vermont, claiming that it is legal to bet on their websites. However, these are off-shore sportsbooks, and since they don’t have the license to offer their services, those services are not really legal. But, since they are not based in the US, there is nothing that the US can do about them.
Vermont’s citizens accessing such services is also not legal, although it is unlikely that the authorities will arrest anyone for placing a few bets. Trying to operate online gambling or sports betting service from within the state would be a crime that the authorities would definitely react to, but placing wagers is unlikely to cause a lot of issues.
Legal sports betting options in Vermont
Currently, there are no legal sports betting options in the state of Vermont, and the closest options are in the casinos of upstate New York or by crossing into New Hampshire and downloading a sportsbook app by DraftKings. Interestingly, DraftKings is one of the legal providers of Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) betting, which has actually been legalized in Vermont.
Other than DFS, there is a state lottery, charitable gambling, and horse betting, although there are no race tracks that are holding horse racing events, so its legality does not mean much. However, sports betting and casinos are not offered in Vermont at this time, not online and not retail.
Of course, off-shore platforms mentioned earlier are not legal, so we do not count them, even though their services are technically available.
Most popular sports in Vermont
Finally, we were interested in checking out which sports might be the most popular in Vermont, just in case that sports betting does actually arrive in the near future. Unfortunately, this is one of few states that do not have any professional teams of its own.
However, its location — meaning the fact that Vermont is a part of New England — means that there are some non-local teams that are popular in the state. For example, when it comes to NFL, the state has seen a great number of New England Patriots’ fans, as this is probably the heaviest-bet team around. Apart from NFL, hockey is also among the more popular sports, with the Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens being the biggest teams around.
There is also the matter of college hockey, which will likely also be quite big, assuming that the law will allow betting on it.
