Sports betting Landscape in Vermont

At the time of writing, the state of Vermont has not yet legalized sports betting, unfortunately. However, it might happen in the near future, as there have been attempts to submit bills that would eventually lead to its legalization. One example is a study bill from 2020, known as S 59, which was submitted by Sen. Michael Sirotkin. The bill proposed the creation of the Sports Betting Study Committee, and after being approved by the Senate, it reached the House.

The bill, as the name suggests, proposes studying various models of sports betting to decide whether introducing sports betting would be beneficial to the state. This was also only one of two bills submitted that year, while the other one was submitted by Sen Dick Spears, known as S 213. This bill proposed the legalization of mobile-only sports betting, similarly to what Tennessee has done.

Services offering mobile sports betting would have to pay a 10% tax, and it would have also changed the DFS tax to 10% instead of the current fixed fee of $5,000 per year. Unfortunately, the bill stalled after its first reading.

This was not the first attempt to regulate sports betting, however. One year before, in 2019, Rep. Thomas Burditt attempted to do it by introducing bill H 484. The goal was to legalize online and retail sports betting, but it never got off the ground. It was read for the first and last time in a House committee.

The future of sports betting in Vermont

Obviously, there is some interest in sports betting in Vermont, and so it could become legal in years to come. The move likely depends heavily on the outcome of the study conducted by the Sports Betting Study Committee. However, there is reason to hope, as the general region of the country in which Vermont is based in is among the most active ones for sports betting in the United States.
