Steam’s Winter Sale 2021: 5 Essential Games You Can Get For Less Than $5

Steam has launched its annual winter sale, which of course means PC gamers will be able to get their hands on thousands (52,000, to be exact) of fantastic games for dirt cheap prices. From now until January 5, active users will be able to pick up a range of titles, expansions and accompanying packs for as little as $2. But what’s worth picking up, and, more importantly, what’s the best deal money can buy from this moment onwards?

The good news is, Steam isn’t known for being stingy when it comes to marking up prices in its frequent sales, meaning you can usually fill your basket without breaking the bank in the process. So, with that in mind, feel free to rifle through your couch cushions for some spare change, because these universally acclaimed hits will give you plenty of bang for your buck. Set aside $10, and you’ll probably have a fistful of triple-A games in your checkout within the hour. That’s Steam for you.

5. The Sims 4 ($4.79)

At this point, it’s hardly worth talking about The Sims and singing its praises, as we’ve spent the last however many years doing exactly that, only with different verses. And although EA and Maxis has yet to touch base on a fifth entry to the globally recognized franchise, its fourth chapter is still very much receiving plenty of tender loving care through expansion packs and regular updates.

The Sims 4, along with all its best-selling content, is currently available on Steam with 88% off its original price, making it just $4.79. But should you be wanting to push the boat out a little further, then both The Sims 4 Deluxe + Seasons and The Sims 4 Deluxe + Cats & Dogs Bundle can be picked up for $17 apiece.

4. Left 4 Dead 2 ($1.99)

Before we had Back 4 Blood, we had Left 4 Dead 2, and before Left 4 Dead 2, we basically had a digital riot, in which impatient gamers kicked and screamed for Valve to give the beloved multiplayer zombie debut a well-deserved sequel. Fast-forward a year, and the money-hungry developer cashed in on the notion and finally resurrected it for a second shot. The rest, as they say, was history.

Fast-forward another twelve years, and that very game was pulled from the archives and given a $1.99 tag to showboat. And while an Xbox 360 game with a $2 tag doesn’t seem all that uncommon in this day and age, it does feel somewhat generous considering the popularity of the game. At this point, it’s basically just giving it away by the looks of it. But you know, we’re fine with that.

3. Fallout: New Vegas ($2.99)

Fallout has long been a fan favourite in the role-playing community, with games that span multiple decades and harness millions of loyal players. Even in 2021, some of the series’ older instalments still boast some enormous sales figures — New Vegas included. But then, considering the spin-off chapter was branded as one of the all-time greats from the 360 era — it sort of comes as no major surprise to see its numbers still thriving.

Anyway, it’s back. Obsidian Entertainment’s cult-classic Fallout: New Vegas has once again embraced the spotlight, complete with a $2.99 to go with it. So, whether you’re on the hunt for a bit of nostalgia, or simply hungering for a heavy dose of dystopian drama, make sure to keep this one in mind next time you trudge through the Steam marketplace.

2. Dead Space 2 ($1.99)

Seeing as we’re already out celebrating the upcoming reboot of the legendary Dead Space franchise, it seems only right that we orbit around its original trilogy for a second, third, or even fifteenth time. And as luck would have it, Visceral Games’ biggest and boldest chapter is on sale for just $1.99 over on Steam right this minute.

Boasting one of the best horror narratives of its generation, Dead Space 2 offers some pretty solid reasons to dive back into the USG Ishimura and experience its bone-shattering thrills all over again. And for less than $2, we’d be crazy not to. Even if you’re not a huge fan of the horror domain — Visceral’s Dead Space 2 is an absolute essential, and one that you’ll definitely have to experience first hand. No exceptions.

1. Titanfall 2 ($4.79)

One of Steam’s most generous offers in this year’s winter sale is Titanfall 2, one of Respawn’s first-person shooter all-time greats of 2016. With a loaded tag of $4.79 (reduced from $29.99), the acclaimed sequel just about goes on to steal the entire show, leaving the 51,999 other deals divided between the shadows.

Titanfall 2 serves up a genre-redefining, story-driven experience, complete with all the bells and whistles one would expect from Respawn’s long arm of industry knowledge. With a rough six hour campaign jam-packed full of heavy encounters and captivating twists, Titanfall 2 will most definitely keep you glued to the edge of your seat as you binge it in one long sitting.
