Square Enix Celebrates Kingdom Hearts’ 20th Anniversary

In the run-up to the big day, Square Enix has gone all out to create a treasure trove of Kingdom Hearts material, including anniversary art from none other than series creator Tetsuya Nomura himself.

As we celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the Disney-based role-playing game, we can only bathe in the sheer brilliance that Square Enix has brought to life over Kingdom Hearts‘ long and healthy tenure. And the fact is, with more of the tale left to tell, the series will more than likely stretch out for another twenty years or more.

As a way to commemorate the anniversary, Nomura has teased some new art that he is currently working on. The full picture, along with a bunch of new details, will be shown at an official event in Tokyo on April 10, 2022. The only downside to this, however, is that it won't be available to stream, meaning we'll have to wait until a later date to see the showcase for ourselves.

As for what's in store for the event—that's anybody's guess. Though, some would say that a teaser for Kingdom Hearts 4 could very well come to light. But again, that's more speculation than anything. Plus, being a smaller event for a local audience, it's unlikely that Square Enix will go as far as promoting a sequel.

Twenty years of Disney

Kingdom Hearts has played a significant role in the action role-playing scene since 2002, when the first game launched on PlayStation 2. Since then, we've seen multiple ports, remasters, and a whole ocean of spin-offs, all of which have tied in to Sora, Donald, and Goofy's lengthy quest to banish the darkness.

The series itself has become something of a global phenomenon over the years, and rightfully so. Thanks to its Disney-themed roster, role-playing components, and bottomless story arcs, fans all over the world have been able to sing its praises for each passing instalment. And with Kingdom Hearts 4 sitting by somewhere on the horizon, it's likely that the series' reputation will continue to bloom.
