7 Best Sports Betting Sites in North Dakota (October 2022)

Updated on

Over the last several years, the US has seen significant demand for the legalization of sports betting. However, this is not going to be done on a federal level; but rather, each state is in charge of legalizing sports betting on its own. Some states have already legalized it, some have banned it, and some are still in the process of making the decision about what to do about it.

North Dakota, for example, legalized sports betting less than a year ago, although the move came quite unexpectedly. The first big attempt to legalize it came in 2019, when two bills that aimed to legalize sports betting as a game of chance both failed. One did make it farther than the other, however. Both bills aimed at allowing charitable gaming organizations to offer sports betting.

However, the bill known as HB 1295 wanted to limit it to professional sports, but it didn’t even pass the House. The other bill, HB 1254, managed to reach the Senate, and it wanted to allow betting on collegiate sports as well. However, the Senate prevented it from reaching the Governor.

Following the failed effort, many expected the initiative to re-emerge in 2020, but this did not happen, most likely due to the global pandemic, which pushed all other matters to the side, so the legislators did not even try to submit any bills aimed at legalizing ND sports betting. However, the following year finally managed to bring forth sports betting in North Dakota in early December 2021.

According to the new law, sports betting can only take place legally in tribal casinos in the state, of which there are three at this moment. All three are owned and operated by the Dakota Nation Gaming Enterprise. With this being the case, only in-person retail sports betting is currently allowed, as the law that legalized it did not mention online sports betting at all.

Best Offshore Sportsbooks for North Dakota Residents

1. Bovada

The first on our list is the Bovada sportsbook and casino, which emerged in 2011. For the first five years of operation, the platform held the Kahnawake Gambling Commission’s license, but in 2016, it decided to give up on it after the Commission went through a policy change that Bovada did not approve of. For the last six years, it has operated without a license, but that still did not affect its quality or performance.

Its sportsbook offers a variety of popular payment methods, and the ability to bet on all kinds of big sports franchises, such as the NBA, NFL, MLB, NCAA football, NCAA basketball, and NHL, among others. Apart from traditional currencies, it also accepts Bitcoin, and it features mobile availability. And, if bettors ever experience an issue or need any sort of help, they can contact customer support at any time via email, phone call, or live chat.

If you wish to learn more about Bovada, we recommend reading our Bovada review. Then, if you feel like this is the platform for you, feel free to proceed to the Bovada website.

2. BetUS

The second on the list is BetUS — a well-known and highly-reputable online sports betting platform for the North American market, although the platform’s reputation has been flawless ever since its foundation in 1994. The platform, which is a casino in addition to being a sportsbook, is the holder of a Curacao Gaming Commission’s license, it is privately held, and it is highly secure and reliable.

BetUS features multiple payment levels, including Visa, Mastercard, and multiple cryptocurrencies, like Bitcoin, Ethereum, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin, and alike. In terms of sports betting, the platform offers numerous options, including football, soccer, baseball, basketball, hockey, cycling, golf, boxing, tennis, and more. Plus, players can also make in-play bets, meaning that they can bet on the games while they are happening. It is also rich with welcome bonuses, promotions, and other benefits that make it highly desirable among bettors.

BetOnline is an online sportsbook that launched in 2004, and like our previous entries, it also offers a casino section with plenty of entertaining gaming titles. It is very user-friendly, starting with the fact that it offers a minimum deposit of $20, it features polite and capable customer support, and it is safe to use. It holds the Panama City license, and it features multiple secure payment methods, including Visa, Mastercard, Discover card, American Express, wire transfers, and even cryptocurrencies.

For those who make a minimum deposit of $55, the platform offers a generous welcome bonus, and those who use cryptocurrencies can also benefit from a number of promotions. In addition to regular, monotonous betting, there is also proposition betting that lets users bet on questions, such as which team will be the first to make the 3-point shot, and alike, just so make it more exciting.

When will online North Dakota sports betting launch?

While retail sports betting is allowed at the three tribal casinos operating in the state, there is no timeline that predicts the arrival of online sports betting or even the potential for online sports betting. North Dakota might see new efforts to legalize mobile sports betting in the future, but for the time being, there is no way to engage in it legally or go through the remote registration process.

Given that North Dakota is the 47th state in the US based on population density, it is unlikely that the state would be able to see major tax revenue from sports betting. The activity is also not as extremely popular as it is, and so it remains unknown whether the state lottery would want to offer online sports betting as part of its service. The fact that the ND lottery is different from a typical state lottery is also making matters more complicated. The North Dakota lottery only allows multistate games, like Powerball.

Sports betting options in North Dakota

As mentioned earlier, North Dakota currently only offers legal sportsbooks inside of the three tribal casinos. The three casinos include Dakota Magic Casino and Hotel in Hankinson, Dakota Sioux in Watertown, and Dakota Connection in Sisseton. All three casinos are owned and operated by the Dakota Nation Gaming Enterprise, and neither of them offers the ability to bet online.

Of course, there is one remaining option, which is to use offshore sportsbooks. These are sportsbooks that are based in other countries but claim that US citizens from anywhere in the country can access them. While technically true, this does not make such platforms legal. In fact, their offering is actually illegal, and accessing the platforms could be seen as breaking the law.

It is worth noting that it is highly unlikely that the authorities would arrest anyone for online betting, especially since there are no records that suggest that this has ever happened. But, even if the authorities are ignoring sports bettors in the state, accessing online sportsbooks is still risky. Since they are not under the US or ND jurisdictions, neither the state nor the country can do anything to help if bettors get scammed by one such platform.

One good way to reduce the chance of running into scammers is to only use licensed and regulated platforms. Naturally, this is not a guarantee that the platforms will treat you fairly, as they are not obligated to pay you your winnings or even return your deposit, especially since the US authorities cannot do anything to them. With that said, it is unlikely that they will risk their reputation and potentially shift the attention of their own regulators by robbing you of a few hundred or even thousands of dollars in winnings.

Most popular sports to bet on in North Dakota

North Dakota, unfortunately, does not have any professional sports teams. With that being the case, it is quite difficult to identify the bettors’ favorites. Even so, it is likely that football will be among the top sports, as it is in most other states. However, hockey could also easily be the close second.

Most states that don’t have professional sports teams have seen the rise of college sports teams which filled that gap, but in North Dakota, this is also not the case. The state has a few college sports teams, such as the University of North Dakota and the North Dakota State, but neither of these is a major Division I college sports team. One team that could benefit from the local allegiances is the Philadelphia Eagles.

Daily fantasy sports contests are not legalized in the state, but they can be accessed, as they were never banned. They were simply ignored, which is good enough for major country-wide DFS providers such as FanDuel, Yahoo!, and DraftKings, all of which accept entries from ND citizens.

One form of betting that is legal, however, is horse racing and pari-mutuel betting. However, there are only two horse tracks in the state — ND Horse Park and Chippewa Downs.
