Sony Awarded Guinness Record for Best-Selling Home Console Brand

Updated on

Sony's Playstation has received the award for the Best-Selling Home Console Brand by Guinness World Records. This sales achievement comes from the tallying combined sales of the Playstation hardware of 450,190,000 units from the launch of the original console on 3 Dec 1994 to 7 Nov 2019. The record sales include from all previous console generations of PS, PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4.

An event was held on 3 Dec to celebrate the milestone as well as the Playstation's 25th anniversary. Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO, Jim Ryan and former CEO Ken Kituragi were in attendance. During a speech at the event, Ken Kutaragi said, “Back when we were developing the original PlayStation, we had the ambition to sell 1 million units. I look back on that now with nostalgia. We launched the PlayStation platform with the aim of changing the face of entertainment. Receiving this award today, I feel the support of the players who have enjoyed our consoles over the years, and as the father of the PlayStation, I can see it has a bright future.”

CEO Jim Ryan had spoken fondly of his experience working with Playstation in a post on the Playstation blog. “As I was helping set up the business in Europe, I remember having to start from scratch with many things, from hiring employees to ordering furniture”, Ryan said. “Back then, we focused on catering to local markets to ensure that a gamer in Poland would feel a part of the broader PlayStation community just as much as someone in the UK, or Japan, or the U.S. Supported by passionate fans all around the world, our business has grown significantly and our focus on community is more important than ever.”
