The PSVR will be welcoming a host of new titles to its library releasing this year. Sony announced that six games will be coming to PS VR – Doom 3: VR Edition, Fracked, Song in the Smoke, After the Fall, I Expect You To Die 2: The Spy And The Liar, and Zenith: The Last City – The Fracture. All the games will be available for PlayStation 5 but only a few are expected to be released on PlayStation 4 as well. Sony had announced in February 2021 that it is working on a new VR headset for Playstation 5 but it won’t be released in 2021.
Making its comeback on Playstation Blog, PSVR Spotlight, a segment discussing PSVR titles and news, is where the announcement of the aforementioned releases was done.
Doom 3: VR Edition
The only game on the list to have a confirmed release date, Doom 3: VR Edition is slated to be coming out on March 29. The action-horror shooter will be released on PS4 and PS5 via backward compatibility, including both of its expansion packs. The “retooled” port of the Doom 3 was designed with the PS VR’s gun-like Aim accessory.
This is the second Doom game for PSVR, following the 2017 VR original Doom VFR. It’s also not the first time Doom 3 has appeared in VR. The game was originally promised as part of the Oculus Rift headset launch, but it was canceled amid a lawsuit from Doom rights holder ZeniMax. (ZeniMax was acquired by Sony’s rival Microsoft last year.)
Song in the Smoke
Developed by studio 17 Bit, Song in the Smoke is a survival game that aims to test player’s abilities to hunt, scavenge, craft, explore and merely survive its mysterious yet dangerous world. The game seems to give the players a degree of freedom in their approach to survival of their wilderness and its trailer shows off gorgeous visuals and creature design. Song in the Smoke is expected to come out sometime later this year.
Fracked is a high-paced cover shooter that combines skiing, climbing, base-jumping, and ziplining into a fluid action. It is developed by nDreams, who also developed the kayak-based shooter Phantom: Covert Ops. Players must face “an army of gun-wielding, interdimensional maniacs known as the Fracked” that have taken over a fracking facility in the mountains. Fracked will be available on both PS5 and PS4 but will have optimized frame rates and resolution for the latest generation.
After The Fall
Vertigo Games, the studio behind Arizona Sunshine, bring their latest title, After the Fall, to the PSVR. In this co-op FPS, players are thrust into an alternative 1980s LA that has frozen over. Here they must face the snowbreed, a horde of zombies that swarm the player in a wolf-like fashion. After the Fall will come with a cross-platform multiplayer with up to four players or players can play alongside AI bots. The game was initially meant to release in 2020 but was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Zenith: The Last City – The Fracture
This anime-influenced MMORPG was initially funded on Kickstarter last year. Set in a high-tech fantasy world, the game takes place generations after a cataclysmic event known as the Fracture. Players will be taking part in a journey to face both men and gods alike to prevent such an event from ever occurring again. Players will have the ability to climb anything and glide far distances as they traverse the world of Zenith as well as face foes they come across with a VR adapted version of conventional RPG combat.
I Expect You To Die 2: The Spy and The Liar
The long-awaited sequel to the successful spy-themed escape room is finally coming to the PSVR. Schell Games’ I Expect You to Die 2 follows the events of the first game with the players taking the role of the Agent, surviving the Death Engine, now going deep undercover into the Zoraxis Organization. Players must find out the organization’s latest plot for world domination and put a stop to Dr. Zor and his allies. Armed with telekinetic powers to navigate these new environments and puzzles, players can fulfill their James Bond fantasy.
