Skate 4 Will Be a Live-Service Game, EA Confirms

The long-awaited sequel to the beloved Skate trilogy is but a hop, skip, and a lunge away. However, the game isn't going by the name of Skate 4 anymore, but skate.. Oh, and it's also scripted to be free-to-play, as well as live-service. The more you know, right?

Electronic Arts has officially lifted the lid on a treasure trove of details surrounding the fourth leg of the cult classic skateboarding series. Skate 4, or skate., will in fact be a live-service title. What this means is that, rather than having a standalone experience and little to no room for growth, EA will continue to spoon-feed it content as the months pass following its launch. This isn't a exactly a new thing, but it does reassure fans that the game will receive the developer's full attention for weeks, months, and perhaps even years after it goes live.

On top of the initial announcement of the game going down the live-service route, EA also mentioned that the game would be free-to-play. As it stands, the game will launch on all major platforms. It will also feature cross-play, meaning players will have the opportunity to skate alongside one another on a variety of consoles.

Sequel, Reboot, or Remaster?

So, why the sudden change in title? Well, as it turns out, skate. isn't a sequel, reboot, or remake, but an entirely new platform. So, instead of making an endless thread of sequels, EA will now cast its focus on a single entry. So, think of skate. as the be all, end all skateboarding game.

Unfortunately, we still don't know when the next Skate game will release. It's still early days, and it's unlikely EA will be dropping it this year. That said, we can probably expect another round of details before December. In the meantime, you can follow the official social feed here for more updates. We'll be sure to give you the scoop should anything pop up in the near future.
