Skate 4: “Swag Bags” Explained

Skate 4 may still be a year or so away from launch, but that hasn't stopped eagle-eyed players from picking holes in its closed beta.

In an attempt to monetize the fourth instalment of the beloved Skate franchise, Electronic Arts is toying with the idea of incorporating “Swag Bags” into the mix. If all goes according to plan, then the loot box-style feature will provide players with a new incentive to play. But, given Electronic Arts' history of being showered with negative feedback for sewing microtransactions into its games, this decision could certainly exacerbate matters and maybe even rock the apple cart before it even sees the light of day.

What Are Swag Bags?

So, what are Swag Bags, and how do you go about obtaining them in Skate 4? Well, according to the devs, the loot boxes can be found and unlocked by trading in “Stars”. These Stars, true to the Skate formula, can be accrued by completing the challenges scattered around the city map. If enough Stars are obtained, players can unlock a series of cosmetics, skateboards, or graphics. So, a relatively harmless concept on paper, and yet there's still plenty of reasons to cast doubt on it.

The good news is, Skate 4 is still in its closed beta phase, meaning nothing is final. So, rest assured that the so-called Swag Bags may just fail to make the cut yet. It's hard to say what will come of the loot boxes at this point, and it's doubtful that we'll see anything come of them for a fair few months, anyway.
