Red Dead Redemption Could Be A Trilogy, Rockstar Hints

Although Rockstar fans have been spreading rumours on what's supposedly coming out next — nothing has really been all that plausible, or at least nowhere near concrete enough to ignite the hype train. Grand Theft Auto 6? That one has been thrown around like a stale joke for the best part of eight years now. Red Dead Redemption 3, well — that's another story.

During a recent discussion with parent company Take-Two Interactive, CEO Strauss Zelnick touched base on the many, many franchises that have left the drawing board and garnered critical success. One of these, of course, was Red Dead Redemption. However, it wasn't just a general nod towards the success of the series that had us craning our necks — but more the details that Zelnick went into regarding its future.

“If it's really, really great, it will keep going,” Zelnick said. “I don't know if you saw it, I just saw the new Bond film, that was great. You would like every franchise to be James Bond. There are precious few entertainment franchises of any sort that fall into that category, but they do exist. And I think GTA is one of them, I think Red Dead is one of them, NBA is obviously one of them because the game will continue to exist.”

“It also requires you to be thoughtful and willing to rest the titles, so you have a sense of, ‘wow, this is a rare event,'” Zelnick continued. “I've always said that annualizing non-sports titles runs the risk of burning out the intellectual property, even if it's good. So we take the time to make something we think is incredibly phenomenal, and we also rest titles intentionally so that there's pent-up demand for that title, so it's a special event.”

So, not for a while then?

Looking at that, it seems as though the third extension to the western tale could still be a ways off yet. Like, the end of the current console generation sort of ways off. And truth be told, Grand Theft Auto 6 will still probably be the first to leave the doors before Red Dead Redemption 3. Whether either of them will arrive before 2026 is another question. However, given the popularity of both bustling platforms, I'd say both are definitely worth holding out for.
