PS5 Stock Crisis 2021: Can We Finally Buy a Console?

Updated on

It's hard to believe that the PlayStation 5 has been shipping out units (yes, all twenty of them) for six months now. That's half a year we've been watching stock checkers and refreshing pages in a bid to gain the upper hand against scalpers — and it's still not entirely over either. Of course, while millions of Sony fans have had the absolute pleasure of receiving the latest hardware and its growing selection of exclusive titles, many hungry gamers are still resorting to the likes of eBay to get their hands on an overpriced copy just to stay in the game. And that's, well — bad.

While Sony has continued to make promises over the stock and has even mentioned having enough consoles to go around for 2022 — the here and now does tend to tell a whole other story. The truth is — PS5's are still very much restricted to scalping factions and the odd shadowy crevice of an online marketplace. Even with June sitting merrily around the corner, the consoles are still in short supply, and players are beginning to get a little wound up over the lack of goods.

The PS5 has been shipped just shy of 8 million times since November 2020.

It's like watching a neighbor show off their latest toy…

Of course, not owning a PlayStation 5 in May when there are already plenty of people shovelling through its wealthy material is only too frustrating. And what's worse is the fact that Sony has since spiralled from the stock concerns and are now putting the focus on the gaming front. Only, for the millions of chunky wallets waiting in burning pockets around the world — physically owning a console is still the priority. Unfortunately, it really is just a waiting game and nothing more.

But let's not draw away from the fact that Microsoft is also struggling to meet demand with the Xbox Series X. While it may not be rushing to build anywhere near as many units as Sony — the latest console is still striving to ship as many copies as remotely possible — and, in turn, still failing to fend off the evolving crowd. But that's a story for another time.

For now, however, we come with no happy news, nor light at the end of the tunnel to raise your spirits. The PS5 is still considered a rarity — and Sony is still dishing out apologies over the lack of stock. 2022, perhaps? Who knows — maybe it is worth waiting for after all? I'm sure a few million people will clue you in once the stock shortage is over. Whenever that may be, of course.
