PlayStation to Add Discord Voice Chat in 7.0 Update

PlayStation will roll out a Discord Voice Chat feature to PS5 in the 7.0 update.

Discord is arguably one of the best and most used messaging platforms in the world — especially for those who play video games and wish to stay connected with like-minded gamers. For this reason alone, both PlayStation and Xbox are looking to integrate it into the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, mainly in the hopes of it helping players stay in the loop on upcoming games and updates.

Tom Henderson of eXputer has now reported that the PS5 will welcome the Discord app in the 7.0 update. As for when that is, of course, is another question, and one that Sony has yet to shed light on. That said, with the 6.0 update coming out in mid-September, the integration is likely to be completed by the end of 2022.

Playstation and Discord

What is Discord, exactly?

Besides being a voice chat app, Discord also allows for players to showcase the games they're playing, as well as keep tabs on other players' activity. These are but a few features that millions of gamers access, with companies and developers even utilizing the platform for general updates and keeping up with fans on a daily basis, too.

It's a small step for PlayStation, but an incredibly effective one nonetheless. To add such a novelty feature may seem somewhat redundant in this day and age, but there's definitely unchartered territory to capitalize on here. And so, we'll just have to see where PlayStation and Xbox take the newfound relationship with Discord. Today, it's voice chatting. Tomorrow, it could be anything.

You can keep up with the status of the Discord integration over on PlayStation's official social handle here. We'll be sure to let you know if anything changes in the meantime.

So, what's your take? Will you be making use of the Discord Voice Chat feature? Let us know over on our socials here or down in the comments below.
