Nintendo’s Next Major Console Could Be A Ways Off Yet

If you had your hopes set on seeing a new Nintendo Switch model or an entirely new console altogether — then you might want to brace yourself for the heavy dose of disappointment that's about to hit you in the cheek.

The Nintendo Switch has been one of the best-selling gaming consoles the world has ever seen, with sales still racking up even today, almost five years after its early-2017 launch. But that's partly the reason why the Japanese kingpin isn't exactly rushing to follow up with a whole new console, sadly.

Speaking in an investor call, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa spoke openly about the future of the brand — specifically the next major console. “On next-gen, we are not saying right now,” Furukawa confirmed. “We are still going through internal discussion on concept, timing, etc., and [are] discussing everything.”

Nintendo released the Switch OLED on October 8th, 2021.

Has the Switch had its day?

Going by Nintendo's timeline of console releases, a new bit of kit would technically be coming our way around 2023. With around six years between most console launch dates, that would be a rough estimate as to when we could see the next-gen release. But then, looking at Nintendo's comments during the investor call, that rough date might be a little too optimistic, to be brutally honest.

Sadly, we probably won't see an update regarding Nintendo's next big project for a while yet. Of course, it's definitely worth keeping our fingers crossed for it, though you can probably scratch a 2023 launch from the agenda.
