Netflix Opens New Games Studio

Netflix has established a brand new games studio in Helsinki, Finland.

To help further the media giant's position in the gaming industry, Netflix has established a brand new studio, which will operate from Helsinki, Finland. This decision comes after the team recently purchased several additional firms for its flourishing portfolio, which includes Night School Studios, Next Games, and Boss Fight Entertainment. And now, to aid its monopolization over the market, the team has worked to build an internal gaming hub from the ground up, which will feature former Zynga and Electronic Arts executive Marko Lastikka as its acting studio director.

“This is another step in our vision to build a world-class games studio that will bring a variety of delightful and deeply engaging original games – with no ads and no in-app purchases – to our hundreds of millions of members around the world,” shared Amir Rahimi, VP of Game Studios at Netflix, in an official announcement. “Why Helsinki? It is home to some of the best game talent in the world. This will be a games studio that we build from scratch, and our second games studio in Helsinki alongside Next Games, which became part of Netflix earlier this year. Along with Night School Studio and Boss Fight Entertainment, these four studios, each with different strengths and focus areas, will develop games that will suit the diverse tastes of our members.”

What Games Will Netflix Develop?

So, what does this mean for gamers? Well, quite a lot, as it happens. Unfortunately, though, as studios take time to iron out the initial kinks, nothing is likely to come about for quite some time. That means, despite having all the tools in place, actual games, trailers, and exclusive sneak previews are probably still quite a ways off.

The good news is, you can look out for Night School Studios' Oxenfree II: Lost Signals in 2023. Apart from that, you'll have to hang fire until Netflix decides to shed light on any upcoming projects. It's early days, for sure, but there's plenty on the horizon for the media giant, and this is evidently just a minor step in the right direction.
