Mobile games accounted for the majority of consumer spending on App Store and Google Play in Q1 2022. According to a new report from Data.ai (formerly App Annie), Games accounted for 73% of consumer spending on Google Play and 60% on the App Store.

Games accounted for 44 percent of all app downloads on Google Play. On the iOS platform, they accounted for 28 percent of all app downloads on the iOS platform. Data.ai predicts that 14 billion downloads were made in the first quarter of 2022.

There was a 42 percent increase in mobile game spending in the quarter to $22 billion, compared to pre-pandemic levels. This quarter marks the largest Q1 total spend ever and further highlights how new mobile game purchase habits have emerged in the wake of the epidemic.

The US, China (where Google Play is not available), and Japan are the top three countries where people buy apps and games through the App Store and Google Play. The fastest-growing markets in the previous quarter were Taiwan, Turkey, and South Korea for Google Play. China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong accounted for the fastest growing market for the App Store.

In the first quarter of 2022, Data.ai predicts a 10 percent quarter-over-quarter increase in the number of iOS devices in the APAC region.

Since the beginning of Q1 2019, weekly mobile game downloads have increased by 45 percent. All downloads on the Google Play Store (44%) and the App Store (28%) were for mobile games, respectively.

Google Play downloads are expected to rise by 15% year over year by the end of the third quarter. Predictions show that consumers will have downloaded 14 billion games.

During the quarter, Garena's Free Fire was the most downloaded game. It was also the most downloaded mobile game of 2021. Indian authorities have banned both Free Fire and Free Fire Max last month, which may have an impact on the rest of the year's growth.

Roblox had the most active users, but the highest grossing game was Genshin Impact.
