Call of Duty to Game Pass

Microsoft is reportedly set to include this year’s Call of Duty game on Xbox Game Pass from the day of its release. According to the Wall Street Journal, Microsoft has made this decision ahead of the game’s official release next month. This move will mark the first time a Call of Duty game will be available on a subscription service at launch.

Xbox Game Pass has always included new first-party titles. Activision Blizzard is now under Microsoft after the completion of the $68.7 billion acquisition. Therefore, including Call of Duty on Xbox Game Pass seems likely but unconfirmed. This decision will address one of the major concerns during the merger negotiations and court battles that followed. Arguments that Call of Duty's availability on Game Pass would give Microsoft an unfair competitive advantage sparked controversy.

Call of Duty and FIFA (now EA Sports FC) are some of the best-performing franchises globally, generating millions annually. Although adding COD to Game Pass may affect these sales numbers, it is also likely to increase service subscriptions significantly. The current Xbox Game Pass subscriptions start at around $11. Therefore, customers who usually buy the game at full price would have access to the game at a far reduced entry cost.

It's still unclear if Game Pass will stick with its present pricing tiers or add a more expensive one for such popular additions. The decision may significantly affect the subscription service and the larger gaming industry.

Call of Duty Release Dates

Microsoft and Activision Blizzard have not officially announced this year's Call of Duty. The announcement and more details about the game will be revealed during their Xbox Showcase event on June 9. The showcase will feature announcements about several upcoming titles, including Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Avowed. A dedicated showcase for the new Call of Duty game is anticipated to follow. According to reports, Activision is targeting a late October release.
