The VR Gaming space is littered with puzzle games and it would be a tough challenge to stand out. That is exactly what the new title from the developers behind the award-winning A Fisherman’s Tale has done. InnerspaceVR and MWM Interactive’s Maskmaker is a VR game that fans of the genre should keep an eye out for and will be releasing on April 20.
Maskmaker is a mystical puzzle game where players take the role of the apprentice of the maskmaker, Prospero, the powerful leader of the mask realm. In his workshop, the player will learn the craft of making these magical masks which have the ability to transport them into different worlds in the mask realm. Players will be able to carve masks before applying them with paints and other adornments (which are all found scattered around different worlds). These worlds, called biomes, each have their own different cultures and guardians whom players can possess by copying their masks. Throughout their journey through the mask realm, players must uncover the truth behind the identity of the elusive Prospero.
“Our team set out to create a non-linear adventure that gives players a strong sense of presence as they explore the mysterious universe of Maskmaker,” said Balthazar Auxietre, creative director and co-founder, InnerspaceVR. “We carefully designed the game to help players feel like a real craftsman when creating these intricate masks, and experience the freedom and discovery as they traverse through unique worlds to uncover the secrets of the mask realm.”
Maskmaker will be available on April 20, 2021, on Oculus Rift S, Quest (via Link cable only), PlayStation VR, HTC Vive, PC VR via SteamVR. While the game will be released digitally for multiple platforms, there was an announcement that there will be a physical copy of the PSVR version of Maskmaker, courtesy of Perp Games. The physical edition of Maskmaker for PlayStation VR is due to be released on 18th June 2021.
“The team at Perp Games are some of the most passionate people we’ve encountered in the gaming industry, and it was a natural fit to partner with them to publish a physical edition of Maskmaker,” said Ethan Stearns, executive vice president at MWM Interactive in a statement. “For many gamers, there is something special about being able to collect physical discs of their favorite games, and we can’t wait for players to get their hands on Maskmaker.”
“A Fisherman’s Tale is such an amazing game and worthy winner of all the acclaim and plaudits,” said Rob Edwards, Managing Director at Perp Games. “InnerspaceVR have proved that they are one of the best VR development studios around, and it is with great pride that we are working with them and MWM Interactive on their new title, the wonderful Maskmaker.”
