Mario Movie Projected to Be the Highest-Grossing Video Game Film of All Time
Although many people were skeptical, and gave The Super Mario Bros. Movie a hard time at first, its debut at the box office is proving all the haters wrong. As of now, the film is on course to become the highest-grossing video game film of all time. That's according to Box Office Mojo, which reports the film has earned $437,946,600 worldwide less than two weeks after its April 5th release.
To put that in context, the highest-grossing video game film of all time currently is 2019's Pokemon: Detective Pikachu, which grossed $449,762,638 in a similar time frame. And The Super Mario Bros. Movie is roughly $13 million shy of exceeding that figure. Needless to say, you can expect it to easily accomplish that over the weekend, and officially take over the title.
Possibly The Biggest Animated Film of All Time Too?
After grossing a record-breaking $377 worldwide in its opening weekend, The Super Mario Bros. Movie flew past the now previous record holder, Frozen II for the “biggest opening weekend for an animated film of all time”. In fact, it nearly doubled Frozen II, which “only” made $130 million in its opening weekend. Not to mention, the Mario Movies opening weekend figure already has already established it as the highest-grossing box office debut of 2023 thus far.
However, achieving the title of the “highest-grossing animated film of all time”, may be a bit out of the discussion. Since it has to compete with other animated films such as The Lion King, Frozen II, Frozen, Incredibles 2, and Minions – all of these films have grossed more than a billion dollars. Currently, The Lion King is seated in the king's chair, with an enormous $1.66 billion earned worldwide.
So, it's a little too early to say if The Super Mario Bros. Movie can or will top that. Nonetheless, if the Mario Movie continues at its current pace, it will easily become the highest-grossing video game film of all time. Adding another trophy, to its shelf.
