Hail to the Rainbow: Everything We Know

If Kona and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided had somehow found a way to merge into one full-fledged video game, then chances are it would look a little something like Hail to the Rainbow, an upcoming “spectacular cyberpunk” action-adventure by Sergey Noskov. And while it may still be a fair ways off from releasing on PlayStation (2025, to be vague), it’s certainly a concept that’s recently piqued our interest.
Granted, 2025 is pushing the boat out a bit, and sure enough, a lot can change in two years. Nevertheless, if you’ve happened to stumble across the recently released sneak preview trailer from the acclaimed Russian developer, then you’ll no doubt want to learn more about it. And if that is the case, then be sure to read on. Here’s what you need to know about it.
What Is Hail to the Rainbow?
Hail to the Rainbow is an upcoming first-person action-adventure game by Sergey Noskov, a reputable developer best known for works including 7th Sector, The Light, and 35MM. In the forthcoming venture, players will take on the role of Ignat, a waylaid survivor whose ultimate challenge is to survive the daily horrors of a post-apocalyptic cyberpunk-infused world.
A story-driven game by heart, Hail to the Rainbow will also look to incorporate a steady balance of horror and shoot ’em up-like action. All of this will gravitate towards a dark and gloomy hellhole setting—a twisted reality in which only the strongest survive its endearing trials and tribulations. As a lone wolf, you will look to not only embrace its chaos, but unravel a mystery that tiptoes deep between the charcoal streets.
Story
In the aftermath of a “tragic military event”, Ignat, a lone survivor , learned to adapt to the harsh reality of the new watered-down world—a cyberpunk metropolis built on machinery and false hope. This is where you, the player, will assume the role of the wandering citizen—amid the dark and gloomy days cloaked in mystery and dangers beyond belief.
Besides the general aesthetic of the story, little else is known about Ignat, more so the path he is put on. Having said that, the blurb does go on to say that the protagonist’s life “changes dramatically when an unexpected message arrives by e-mail.” As for how this will all come to be, of course, is still anybody’s guess. Whatever the case, though, there’s sure to be plenty of unsolved mysteries to crack, memories to unravel, and natural elements to overcome along the way. But more on that later.
Gameplay
Hail to the Rainbow is billed as a first-person story-driven adventure game, though one that also makes use of “horror and shooter elements.” As such, players can expect to delve into a rich and atmospheric world, and one that is predominantly based around tackling the elements and its few surviving citizens. And, not to mention the drones that patrol its city streets—enemies that you will no doubt have to encounter and, well, deal with in an appropriate manner, be it either stealthily or recklessly.
“Explore the environment, explore electronic records and solve technical puzzles, collect items and upgrade your inventory, this will come in handy on your journey,” the blurb concludes.
Development
Sergey Noskov, creator behind The Light and 7th Sector, first revealed Hail to the Rainbow back at the beginning of March. Since then, the game has been given a sneak preview trailer, mostly outlining the world’s setting and a snippet of its gameplay elements. It was said during the announcement that the game would be heading to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 in 2025.
Trailer
Given the fact that Sergey Noskov only lifted the veil on Hail the Rainbow a week ago, it does come as a pleasant surprise that the game has already received a sneak preview trailer. Granted, it doesn’t give a huge amount away, what with it only cracking the one-minute mark, but it does paint a general portrait of the post-apocalyptic setting and its few remaining habitants.
Chances are, a follow-up trailer featuring more of the actual gameplay will release much closer to the time of its release. Until then, you can catch the initial announcement preview above.
Release Date, Platforms & Editions
Hail to the Rainbow will be coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam at some point in 2025. Rather vague, for sure, but it’s also the most Sergey Noskov has given away since making the formal announcement. Does this mean we’ll get to see an actual release window at some point in 2023? It’s hard to say, though from the looks of things, it’s still early days, so don’t expect to see any major update until at least Q4 2023 at the very earliest.
Again, as it’s still early days and we’ve quite a ways to go until it launches on consoles and PC, we can’t say for certain whether or not there’ll be any special or collector’s editions of the game. If something of the sort does pop up before its 2025 launch, however, then we’ll happily fork over the details and point you in the right direction.
There’s a chance, too, that Hail to the Rainbow will shed its console exclusivity and head over to Xbox at some point in the aftermath of its 2025 launch. As it stands, though, Sergey Noskov has no plans to make this happen, meaning the only two copies you’ll be able to purchase will either be on PlayStation or PC.
