Games on Steam is a weekly installment that tackles the latest and greatest Indie games from this popular platform. Today, we will solve deadly VR cases, fight monstrous fires, and build a complex beaver society.

Tails of Iron

To start, we have a challenging action RPG made by Odd Bug Studio. Tails of Iron follows the story of a rat named Regi, as he tries to reclaim his kingdom. The game is set in medieval times and is filled with a colorful and unforgettable cast of characters that'll help you in your adventure. Its combat is hard but rewarding, and the story is excellently narrated by the Geralt of Rivia VA. All in all, Tails of Iron is an interesting mix of Hollow Knight and Dark Souls that also brings a lot of new things to the table.

TOEM

TOEM is one of the more unique casual games on Steam. It is a hand-drawn adventure in which you'll help a quirky cast of characters by taking great photos. The game is set in a relaxing world and the vibe is further enhanced with a good selection of chill beats.  For those of us searching for a cool indie that will help us unwind, TOEM is an obvious choice.

Flynn: Son of Crimson

And now, we have a retro 2D platformer, that will throw you back into the magic days of SNES. Son of Crimson follows the story of Flynn, who is trying to save the island of Rosantica from the evil Scourge. On your side, you will also have a mythical dog named Dex, as well as 3 crimson weapons that offer distinct fighting mechanics. Visually, the game looks beautiful, thanks to the crisp pixel art style. Son of Crimson is most similar to Momodora and Shovel Knight and gives a solid flashback to the world of the 90's.

Gamedec

If you are looking for a solid tabletop cyberpunk RPG, pay attention. Gamedec puts you in the role of a detective whose cases take place in various virtual worlds. It is one of those titles where each choice matters, and you have multiple ways to approach the problem. The game lets you choose among various professions, which will in turn define your playstyle and how you are perceived. It may not yet be on par with Disco Elysium, but Gamedec has a lot of unrealized potentials that might get reached in the near future.

Severed Steel

Severed Steel is a stylish and hectic FPS in which you'll also leap of walls, evade bullets in slow motion, and do crazy parkour-like flips. Since you can't reload, each shot has to be carefully placed to ensure maximum efficiency. Severed Steel also has a destructible environment and kickass electronic soundtrack that make it really fun to play. It's as if Matrix and John Wick had a baby – and that can only be a good thing. Although a bit short, Severed Steel offers engaging gameplay that's not easily matched.

Eastward

Next, we have a charming, yet post-apocalyptic adventure set in Eastward, a small continent that is quickly declining. Most of its inhabitants have moved to underground villages, but for you, the call of the outside world is too strong to ignore. On your journey, you will travel through dozens of towns and dungeons, fighting against weird monsters. In short, Eastward is a wacky adventure with a lot of heart that will appeal to the fans of old-school RPGs.

Embr

Embr is a hectic action simulator in which you'll team up with friends to become the best firefighters in the world. As you run into burning buildings and save lives, you'll start earning serious cash, which will let you buy upgrades and better tools. Be careful though, as each of the 25 levels is filled with many traps that can make your life hell. Embr gives you multiple ways to accomplish your goals, so it doesn't get old anytime soon. All in all, this is a fun and lighthearted simulator that can be enjoyed by the whole family.

Metallic Child

This one is for the fans of rogue-lite hack and slashers. In Metallic Child, we follow Rona – an android that aims to stop a massive robotic rebellion. You get new skills by taking Cores from the enemies, which is an interesting gameplay mechanic. The game gives you a ton of weapons to choose from and rewards precision, rather than mindless spamming of attacks. Metallic Child is also filled with amazing visuals and epic boss fights. In short, this is a welcome addition to the genre that will entertain you for quite some time.

Hanako: Honor & Blade

Hanako is a multiplayer hack-and-slash experience that takes place in Feudal Japan. In it, you will fight against 24 other players to test your skills and become the ultimate warrior. There are 4 classes to choose from: warrior (Kenshi), tank (Nagi), assassin (Ninja), and archer (Ite). The game is fast-paced and gives you a lot of cool combos to experiment with. Although the game has a small player base, it's definitely worth a try, especially because it's pretty affordable.

Timberborn

Lastly, we have an interesting colony sim in which you take control of beavers. Timberborn takes place after humans have already perished, and lets you pick between 2 factions: Folktails and Iron Teeth. Both of them have vastly different playstyles, which gives you more than enough material, even though the game is still in early access. To make your beaver society thrive, you'll have to build elaborate irrigation systems, upgrade your technology and satisfy individual needs. Timberborn is a well-polished and addictive indie that you shouldn't pass on.
