Games on Steam: Sweet Dreams are Made of This
Games on Steam is a weekly installment that tackles this popular platform's latest and greatest Indie games. Today, we will kick ass in Taiwan, clash mech forces, breed crocodiles with ducks, and much more.
The Legend of Tianding
To kick things off, we have a cool side-scrolling beat-em-up. In The Legend of Tianding we follow Liao, a legendary hero from Taiwan with his own sense of justice. What immediately stands out, is a lush comic book art style, but this game is more than just eye-candy. It also has smooth combat with a lot of combos to master and some badass boss fights. The story is based on historical events and is surprisingly complex, considering the genre. If you are a fan of games like Viewtiful Joe, you shouldn't miss this one.
Happy Game
Happy Game mixes surrealism, psychedelia, and horror into a truly unique experience. It follows the adventures of a young boy trapped in a terrifying nightmare. Your goal is simple: make him happy. To do this, you will have to solve a number of increasingly disturbing puzzles that may or may not include headless bunnies. As you might've guessed, Happy Game doesn't really live up to its name. But, if you love weird and uncomfortable, you will see it as a real treat.
Age of Empires IV
While technically not an Indie, I just couldn't leave Age of Empires IV from this week's list. A popular RTS is finally back and brings new gameplay mechanics. In it, we will follow the history of 8 distinct civilizations, such as English, Chinese, and Sultanate. The game is spread in 4 campaigns and covers the most important events from Dark Ages to the Renaissance. Every faction has its own strengths, and mastering each one will prove to be challenging. In short, Age of Empires IV stays true to its roots, bringing detailed history lessons and mixing them up with epic battles.
Subway Midnight
Next, we have another unique puzzle horror game for those of us still riding on the Halloween high. Subway Midnight puts you not in a haunted mansion, but a seemingly endless train occupied with dark forces. This ain't an action game, but a slow and atmospheric experience in which you will have to think to piece up all of the puzzle pieces.
Let's Build a Zoo
Here's a fresh simulator that lets you create a wacky zoo. Aside from constructing enclosures, and buying animals, you are also able to do DNA splicing to come up with brand new species! Let's Build a Zoo is overloaded with cute inhabitants, such as crocoduck and chickow, that will make you smile from ear to ear. In total, you can design over 300 000 types of animals, so there's much to explore as well. If you've ever wanted to create a bizarre zoo, look no further and immerse yourself in this city builder.
Crab Game
Can you borrow the idea of a wildly successful Netflix series and turn it into a good game? Judging by Crab Game, the answer might be yes. For the uninitiated, this is a multiplayer game in which you will fight for a big cash prize by completing a series of deadly children's games. If you are the last one standing – you win. In practice, Crab Game is really fun to play even if you are familiar with some of the puzzles, and there's a ton of surprises here as well. The game is also completely free, so there's no good reason to pass on it.
Get Stuffed
Get Stuffed is a casual multiplayer Indie that mixes horror and comedy. In each round, players are separated into 3 categories. Victims have to find a way to escape from Killers, while Antagonists have to finish a list of personal objectives that change from map to map. This makes for dynamic gameplay that might seem overwhelming until you get the hang of it. All in all, Get Stuffed is pretty complex and one of the more entertaining new horror games on Steam. It is also free to play, so I won't be surprised if it gets popular really fast.
Tunche
How about a charming hack-and-slash action roguelike for a change? Tunche puts you in charge of 5 distinct characters tasked with bringing peace back to the Amazon rainforest which is now overrun with evil beasts. The game has a distinct visual style, which reminds me of older Disney cartoons, such as Lilo and Stitch. Combat-wise, Tunche offers many skills to unlock, although it's a bit slow in the beginning. It will mostly appeal to kids or people who feel like one.
In Silence
In Silence is another in line of interesting multiplayer horror games. You will either play as a survivor or a Quiet Place-type monster named Rake that uses sounds to hunt them down. Depending on your strategy, you can try to escape it or fight back. In Silence gives survivors one of 16 perks, such as mechanic or hunting skills, which will be useful in different situations. All in all, this is a tense and atmospheric survival game that might pop out soon.
Super Robot Wars 30
Let's end this week's list with a tactical JRPG that puts you in charge of mech forces that marked the last few decades of Asian culture. SRW30 brings an intuitive, turn-based combat system, reminiscent of the Pokemon series, and fills it with epic, high-energy cutscenes. Taking characters from anime shows like Gun X Sword and Mobile Suit Gundman, Super Robot Wars 30 delivers a badass experience that will be enjoyed by the fans.
With 100+ editions of Games on Steam, you won't run out of games to play any time soon. You can check out the last one here.
