Games on Steam is a weekly installment that tackles this popular platform’s latest and greatest Indie games. Today, we will learn how to survive on an old space station, escape from the haunted castle, and conquer Lovecraftian monsters.

Source of Madness

To start, we have a challenging action RPG. Source of Madness takes place in Loam Lands, a Lovecraftian world inhabited by nightmarish monsters. The land and beasts are both procedurally generated, as the game uses neural network AI to set up an atmosphere of dread and uncertainty about what's next. Visually, the game looks amazing, while the gameplay is challenging enough to keep you occupied for hours. All in all, Source of Madness is a unique take on the cosmic horror genre and employs cool tricks that many devs could learn from.

Citizen Sleeper

Citizen Sleeper is a cyberpunk RPG in which all of your choices matter. Here, you take the role of sleeper – a storage unit for human consciousness that escaped to a ruined space station to live with other outcasts. Unfortunately, you are owned by a corporation that'll do its best to get you back. To survive, you will need to build relationships by navigating through multiple factions and do a lot of shady work. Thanks to its unpredictable story and charming characters, Citizen Sleeper stands among the best dialogue-based Indies.

Crowns and Pawns: Kingdom of Deceit

If you are looking for a smart adventure in the vein of Monkey Island, Crowns and Pawns should pique your interest. The game takes place in modern-day Europe and follows Milda, a woman who inherited an old house in Lithuania. When she gets threatened to give it up, Milda jumps into the rabbit hole to find out what secrets lay hidden inside. Crowns and Pawns has a lot to love – challenging puzzles, witty dialogue, and a charming protagonist that will stop at nothing to get to the truth.

Songs of Conquest

Lastly, we have an excellent strategy/RPG from Lavapotion. In Songs of Conquest, you follow Wielders – powerful magicians that are exploring the unknown. The game has a complex turn-based combat system that puts a lot of emphasis on positioning and synergizing your troop abilities. Aside from conquering enemies, you will also have to carefully manage your resources to build a powerful empire. Songs of Conquest is inspired by classics like Warcraft 3 and HOMM but has enough unique elements to make it really stand out.
