Games on Steam is a weekly installment that tackles the latest and greatest Indie games from this popular platform. Today, we follow the misadventures of a 3-armed bounty hunter, escape from spooky Toombs, colonize Mars, and much more.

They Always Run

To start, we have a space western that mixes hack and slash and platforming elements. They Always Run follows the story of Aiden, a three-armed bounty hunter that hunts the most deadly targets around the galaxy. The game is very stylistic while also having funny dialogue, fluid combat, and satisfying combat to back it up. If you are a fan of shows like Mandalorian, They Always Run should be right up your alley.

Stolen Realm

If you are looking for a solid turn-based/action RPG, Stolen Realm should be high on your list. In it, you'll take the role of an elven hero, who has to save his realm from a greedy emperor. So far, you can choose between the regular fighter, thief, or wizard classes, or create one that's completely your own. Builds let you mix and match abilities from multiple skill trees, which can bring some pretty wild synergies, considering we are talking about 6-player teams. All in all, Stolen Realm is addictive and one of the best new RPG games on Steam.

Despot's Game

Despot's Game is a dystopian army battler in which you will guide a team of humans through randomly generated dungeons. They wake up naked and afraid, so it's best to transform them with loot and separate them into special classes, such as cultists or ninjas. Despot's Game is based on indirect combat, so you will have to focus on your ability to strategize, rather than fast reflexes. There are hundreds of ways to combine your units, which adds to the replayability. For the uninitiated, Despot's Game is one of the best introductions to the auto battler genre.

Undying

Undying is a heartfelt game that follows a family as they navigate through a zombie wasteland. Being bitten, Angling knows that she has no time to waste if she wants to teach her son crucial skills for survival. This includes combat but also cooking, crafting, and gathering material. From the start, Undying doesn't give you much to work with, so you'll have to use all of your resources sparingly. Considering it's still in early access, the game is well polished and has enough features to keep you occupied for some time.

Nuclear Blaze

Next, we have a unique retro adventure from the makers of Dead Cells. You play as a professional firefighter dropped into a mysterious complex where you have to subdue fire and look for survivors. Your job is straightforward, execution is anything but. The game has crisp pixel graphic art and addictive mechanics that will keep you engaged till the end. Although a bit short, Nuclear Blaze is a creative, beautiful, and satisfying Indie that I hope gets a longer sequel.

Inscryption

Halloween may be over, but there are still many spooky games worth playing. One of them is Inscryption, a psychological deck builder with an amazing atmosphere. You are locked in a cabin and forced to play cards with a mysterious figure. The game has many unique mechanics, especially in the 1st act, and a strong story that is told in a unique way. Inscryption is a moody and creative game with a lot of twists, that's best experienced if you go in completely blind.

Let's play a little game … Steam

Escape Simulator

Here we have an online puzzler that will appeal to the fans of escape rooms. To free yourself, you will have to examine everything around you, find clues, and solve increasingly sophisticated riddles. The game is set in 4 distinct areas, with 16 rooms in total, but there's also a room editor that gives a lot of additional content. Escape Simulator can be played solo, but is best enjoyed in a small team (2-3 friends).  Overall, this is one of the best escape room puzzlers on the market, and I can wholeheartedly recommend it.

Terraformers: First Steps on Mars

First Steps on Mars is a prologue to Terraformers, an atmospheric colony sim. Elon Musk has reached his goal and human settlers have started to colonize the Red planet. Turns out, creating sustainable cities on Mars is anything but easy. To do this, you will have to explore the inhospitable planet, care for your workers, and wisely manage your resources. Although the demo is limited to 30 rounds, it offers a nice glimpse into how addictive and complex Terraformers may be. It's one of those games on Steam that you should definitely keep an eye out for.

The Riftbreaker

For those of you looking for a strong survival strategy, I would recommend The Riftbreaker. The game follows the adventures of an elite scientist armed with a badass Mecha-suit whose task is to colonize Galatea 37. To do this successfully, you will have to create a two-way dimensional rift back to earth, which is a complex endeavor that requires mastery of your surroundings. It's up to you to create a tight base, extract resources, explore the planet, and defend yourself from its inhabitants. The game impresses on all accounts, from smooth and balanced combat to the number of details put into base management. When mixing genres, it's really hard to pull it off successfully, but The Riftbreaker does so sucessfully.

Project Kat

Lastly, we have an offbeat mix of RPG, puzzler, and horror. In it, we follow Kat, a high school student who wants to find out the story behind the mysterious golden letter. What makes Project Kat interesting, is that there are various ways in which you can solve puzzles, each of which may give you a vastly different outcome and ending. The game doesn't rely on cheap jump scares but builds a strong atmosphere, while also providing a lot of funny moments. Project Kat is a prologue to Paper Lily but also has a standalone story that works very well.
