Games on Steam is a weekly installment that tackles the latest and greatest Indie games from this popular platform. Today, we will learn how to kickflip with a powerboat, solve puzzles by singing, take stunning wildlife portraits, and catch pandas.
Let’s kick things off with a wacky multiplayer game that puts us in a role of a lumberjack. Aside from chopping down trees and taking care of your animals, you will also need to watch out for nature itself as she tries to take you down. She is ruthless, and you will have to deal with meteor showers, wildfires, dinosaurs, and pirate attacks. As you might’ve guessed, Lumberhill is a pretty chill game that constantly throws you in unexpected situations.
Did you ever want to skateboard, but with a boat? Wave Break, a cool new project from Funktronic Labs, lets you do just that. Set in the ’80s, you will be kickflipping, grinding, and even shooting your way through the streets of Miami Vice. Brimming with style, the game lets you choose between an episodic singleplayer mode or you can test your chiseled skateboating skills online. With great visuals, an engaging story, and a cool soundtrack, Wave Break comes out as a well-polished project that will appeal to anyone with even a slight interest in skateboarding.
E.E.R.I.E is an open-world anime third-person shooter inspired by Touhou Project. Set in a modern magic world, you will be following the story of 3 characters: Daiyousei, Ringo, and Kijin Seija. However, each of them has different skills and mission goals. To complete them, E.E.R.I.E gives you a big arsenal of weapons, from SMGs and shotguns, up to snipers and grenade launchers. The weapons behave very realistically, and each one can be deeply customized. All in all, this is a solid, challenging tactical shooter that will entertain you for a few hours.
Chicory: A Colorful Tale
It’s time to grab your digital crayons and go on an adventure. Chicory, a masterful artist, has gone missing, and it’s your job to find him. Luckily, he has left behind his mighty brush, which you will use to manipulate your surroundings and solve puzzles. What at first glance seems to be a cute concept for a short game quickly turns into a provoking and emotional experience, which lasts for quite a while. Chicory is as immersive as it is charmful, and it may very well be one of the best new games on Steam.
Detective From the Crypt
If coloring ain’t your thing, maybe you’ll want to solve a murder? You’ll do this from the perspective of a ghost named Jane. You will have your own laboratory at your disposal to examine each piece of evidence you come across, which gives the game a nice Victorian feel. And if that’s not enough, you will have a cute cat as your assistant. While not being very long, Detective From the Crypt has a strong atmosphere and story that will suck you in.
Next, we have a unique and minimalistic adventure made by a single developer. Clawfish lets you explore a small dock and its charms. Here, you can talk with seagulls, row a boat, and, most importantly, play fishing arcades. By doing this you will slowly free fish trapped inside it and fill the waters surrounding you. What makes this more than a snoozefest is its great atmosphere, which oozes with a slight hint of nostalgia. Clawfish may not be a long and epic experience, but it’s a reminder that all we sometimes need is just to chill out and catch fish from a local claw machine.
If you are searching for a solid turn-based RPG similar to Fire Emblem, you will probably enjoy Dark Deity. The game follows the journey of 4 legendary heroes set out to bring order to their world by collecting powerful ancient artifacts. Dark Deity lets you pick between 50+ classes, each with unique skills. Every choice has the potential of taking the story in a different direction, which ensures that gameplay won’t get old any time soon. Dark Deity may not be perfect, but it’s an entertaining and challenging RPG with a lot going for it.
Beasts of Maravilla Island
Beasts of Maravilla Island puts you in a role of a wildlife photographer exploring one mesmerizing island. Its ecosystem is rich, spanning from lush rainforests to swampy lagoons, and filled with peculiar creatures. However, the island is in danger, and it is your job to save it by documenting its flora and fauna. On your way, you will also have to solve numerous puzzles based on your interaction with the animals. In short, this is a relaxing and wholesome Indie that can be enjoyed by the whole family.
One Hand Clapping
Better warm up your vocal cords, because One Hand Clapping is all about using your sweet voice to solve puzzles. Luckily, you don’t have to worry much about singing off-key, as the game is pretty relaxed and will let you learn from your mistakes. Visually, One Hand Clapping looks vibrant, and this is also reflected in its quirky inhabitants. All in all, this is one of the more unique new games on Steam. So, if you find yourself rehashing arias in your shower, maybe it’s time that you switch to this little gem.
Minute of Islands
Lastly, we have a beautiful adventure platformer that gave me Adventure Time vibes. In it, you will take the role of mechanic Mo who is tasked with fixing the world that’s on the brink of extinction. To do this, she will have to restore ancient engines that were left by a mysterious race of giants. Minute of Islands has a distinct hand-drawn style that mixes perfectly with its charming cast of characters. Although the gameplay is a bit sparse, the game has an engaging story that will keep you interested till the end.
