ea bans russian teams from competitions

After halting their services in Russia, EA has now banned players and teams from Russia and Belarus from its competition. This comes after the Russian forces continue to invade different regions of Ukraine.

In the latest announcement, Electronic Arts has stated that,

“We have made the decision to remove Russia and Belarus as eligible countries in our esports programs. Effective immediately, players and teams from Russia and Belarus are ineligible to participate in the Apex Legends Global Series and EA Sports FIFA 22 Global Series.”

This means that players and teams residing in Russia or Belarus won't be able to participate in the upcoming events – Apex Legends Global Series and FIFA 22 Global Series. However, Russian and Belarusian players not living in either country can still take part. Players who have moved must prove that they have moved before March 20. This was stated in an email that was sent to players.

Unlike some other organizers, EA has banned teams as well as players from entering the tournament. Considering the 1v1 and 2v2 format of the FIFA 22 series, the absence of Russian and Belarusian players won't affect it much. The empty spots can be easily filled with other players.

However, Apex Legends Global Series' format is very likely to be affected by this. Out of the top 120 players, 33 are Russians, which in turn accounts for 12 teams. This means the format of the competition is likely to undergo some change.

Following the Russian invasion on February 24th, several tech and gaming companies have suspended sales and services to Russia. Tournament hosts have either completely or partially banned Russian players and teams. Others, like ESL Pro League, have allowed Russian players to take part under a neutral name.
