E3 2021: Gearbox Showcase Round-Up — Borderlands, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands & More

Updated on
Gearbox

Gearbox has officially paved the way for shoot-and-loot video games, with Borderlands acting as their driving force for the last twelve years. And it's because of this eternal acclaim that the franchise employs, that E3 2021 was bustling with juicy content that brought even more of the series to life. Of course, while many fans of the timeline half expected a slew of Borderlands hotfixes and updates to light the stage — Gearbox instead went on to deliver a spin-off that nobody really expected.

Pushing back to Summer Game Fest, Gearbox unveiled their highly ambitious Tiny Tina's Wonderlands chapter, which proved to be a total shocker for everyone tuning in. And now, as far as E3 goes — Gearbox has shed a much brighter light on the works that ultimately drive the team. But what exactly did the studio announce at the annual showcase? Well, here are the highlights, plain and simple.

The Borderlands Movie

Release Date: 2022

Gearbox and Borderlands fans weren't overly impressed with the first half of the showcase tonight, considering it mainly revolved around the Borderlands movie and not a game of any sort. Even still, Randy Pitchford of Gearbox did show up to present the motion picture and give a virtual tour of the Borderlands set, claiming the movie is roughly halfway done. Other than that, the Gearbox head gave very little away, and instead resorted to brief talks with co-workers and other studio hands to sway the time. But that's about it.

Homeworld 3

Homeworld 3 - Announcement Trailer

Release Date: 2022

Platforms: PC

Other than confirming the ongoing development of Homeworld 3, the long-awaited sequel to the Blackbird Interactive series, nothing major was shed on the upcoming chapter. In fact, the showcase only went on to present a thirty-second clipping to confirm the news before going dark. And so, with that — there isn't a great deal we can share on the matter. Homeworld 3 is in production, plain and simple.

Tiny Tina's Wonderlands

Release Date: Early 2022

Platforms: Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC

Moving on from the Borderlands set and bland updates, Gearbox dug into the main portion of the upcoming works — namely Tiny Tina's Wonderlands. In a short snippet, Gearbox unveiled a few cinematics along with a brief talk with senior producer Kayla Belmore. However, other than giving a nod to Assault on Dragon's Keep for the influences for the Gearbox title, not a great deal was explored. Of course, the video reel did unveil a few enemies and boast a well-respected roster of characters, but apart from that, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands was left to the imagination, suggesting it isn't anywhere near ready for the public eye just yet.

Tribes of Midgard

Tribes of Midgard ▪ E3 2021 ▪ Trailer Official

Release Date: July 27th

Platforms: Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC

Following on from the rather disappointing Tiny Tina's Wonderlands update, Gearbox shared a round of news on their upcoming Tribes of Midgard, which is expected to release next month on consoles and PC. Being one of the more intriguing reveals that Gearbox had on display, Tribes of Midgard definitely piqued our interest with its refreshing concept and Diablo-inspired format. And as far as escalating the hype went — Gearbox definitely wasn't holding back on promoting the ambitious survival flick.

Godfall: PS4 Announcement

Godfall - Fire & Darkness: Lightbringer Update Trailer | PS5, PS4

Release Date: August 10th

Platforms: PlayStation 4

Topping off the Gearbox Showcase was a small update that PS4 users will most definitely benefit from. Godfall, which launched on PlayStation 5 and PC last year, will be coming to PS4 on August 10th. Nested within the port will be a slew of updates and the new Fire and Darkness expansion, along with a free Lightbringer update. Bridging the gap between both platforms will be a series of new enemies, loot and upgrades which will gradually enter the game over the coming year.
