Death Stranding Movie Has Been Confirmed

A movie adaptation of Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding has been confirmed following the unveiling of the second game.

Well, they often say good things tend to come in threes. Turns out, Hideo Kojima is a firm believer of such a thing, as the reputable director has finally lifted the veil on not one project, but two entirely new projects that will tie in with the ever-evolving Death Stranding universe.

Of course, it was only last week at The Game Awards that Kojima announced the sequel to 2019's Death Stranding, aptly titled DS2. Since the announcement, Kojima has also shed light on a movie adaptation of the post-apocalyptic franchise, and has made it clear that said movie will expand on the series by bringing in “new elements and characters.”

“We are thrilled and honored to have the opportunity to partner with brilliant and iconic Hideo Kojima on his first film adaptation,” Alex Lebovici of Hammerstone Studios commented. “Unlike other big budget tentpole video game adaptations, this will be something far more intimate and grounded. Our goal is to redefine what a video game adaptation could be when you have creative and artistic freedom. This film will be an authentic ‘Hideo Kojima' production.”

What Will Death Stranding Be About?

Unfortunately for fans of the video games, the movie won't be a direct adaptation of the story as seen in Sam Porter's tale. Instead, it'll look to flesh out its world more, and perhaps build on some of the weaker story arcs that didn't make the cut in Kojima's IP. In short, though, this means Norman Reedus, Troy Baker, and Mads Mikkelsen probably won't be making the final cut.

“I couldn't be more excited about this new partnership with Hammerstone Studios,” Hideo Kojima added. “This is a pivotal moment for the franchise and I'm really looking forward to collaborating with them in bringing Death Stranding to the big screen.”

So, when will said show be available to watch in theatres? Well, that's the thing — we don't actually know. According to inside sources, Kojima has yet to source a director or writer to pilot the project. In other news, though, it has been said that the movie is “on the fast track.” So, clearly the wheels are in motion somewhere.
