CS:GO Major: possible new classification system

Updated on

Counter Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) majors can change the invitation format and team ranking. According to HLTV, Valve contacted CS:GO tournament organizers and said it was interested in implementing a team ranking system. According to the portal, the change would happen in the second Major of 2020, scheduled to happen in November.

If this system is implemented, the teams would need to earn points in the ranking in two extra tournaments, which would take place shortly before the competition. It is worth remembering that in May the competitive scenario of the game will have the first Major of the year, ESL One: Rio 2020, which would also give points to the teams.

With this new classification system, the teams would dispute their points in ESL One: Rio and in the other two competitions in search of the best possible position in the ranking. After the end of the three competitions, the best eight teams would reach the status of “Legend”, that is, they would be confirmed in the Major's main event. The next eight teams, in turn, would have the status of “Challenger”, and would need to go through the first phase of the competition. The other teams would be defined in the current system, which grants two extra places for the four regions: Europe, North America, CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) and Oceania.

The extra tournaments would take place between the months of July and September, with a total prize pool of US $ 250 thousand. In addition, the events would have at least 24 participants, 16 of which came from ESL One: Rio. The organization of the tournaments would be responsible for selecting the remaining teams to participate in the competitions.

Currently, in addition to the places played in the four regions, the teams guarantee their presence in a Major based on their positions in the previous tournament. The recent example is that of the StarLadder Berlin Major 2019, where the top eight teams secured the status of “Legend” for ESL One: Rio, while the next six teams were given the status of “Challenger”, totaling 14 teams confirmed for the Major in Brazil.
