Reports suggest Ubisoft could resurrect the beloved Prince of Persia franchise within the next few years. Of course, we have to take these grains of sand with a pinch of salt — especially seeing as these are strictly rumours at present. Ubisoft, on the other hand, has yet to spill any beans on a potential reboot to the spiritual hack and slash. Remakes, on the other hand — now that’s something we can talk about.
It’s been three months since Ubisoft teased us with the remake trailer of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, and to say fans were underwhelmed would probably be an understatement. In fact, people haven’t been holding back when it comes to slating every square-inch of the once-loved classic. With the graphics being compared to the likes of a PlayStation 3 game, critics are suggesting that the unreleased remake is also in need of a future remake. So, not exactly what Ubisoft had in mind.
Going back to the rumours of a potential Prince of Persia reboot; it is believed that Ubisoft is simply treading waters with The Sands of Time to draw attention. Perhaps, with this fly on the wall approach, the developer can see if an audience still resides around the decade-old franchise. Or, providing Ubisoft fans are content with the Assassin’s Creed series, whether a reboot even needs to happen at all. Again, these are only possibilities rather than facts — but it does seem like the smartest strategy.
A YouTuber who has made accurate leaks before regarding Prince of Persia has since brought the latest news to light. In a video discussing the minor details of a reboot, YouTuber “Lazy Assassin” mentions a ballpark date for a revival of the franchise.
“I’ve got a new Prince of Persia leak that you won’t find on any other news source. Basically, Sands of Time is coming next year anyway, but aside from that, Ubisoft is working on a completely new Prince of Persia game that won’t be a remake,” the YouTuber said. “Right now, the early concept is being worked on, where game mechanics are completely being redesigned, and you can say that it’ll reboot the series. It’ll probably come out in 2023 or 2024.”
While Ubisoft may be toying with the idea, there’s most definitely an audience to be captured with a revival series. However, going on what we’ve seen in the past; Prince of Persia has, in fact, already had two reboots since its 1989 birth. Sadly, only one of those reboots really made a serious dent in consumers pockets. But, you know what they say: third times the charm.
Unfortunately, only time will tell with this one. On one hand, we’d love to see Ubisoft bring back the Prince for another mystical quest. Although, on the other hand, based on the remake trailer — maybe it’s better left in the sand after all. Either way, we’ll be sure to update you should any more leaks come to fruition.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time will launch on January 21st 2021 on Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
