Call of Duty developer Infinity Ward has now confirmed their latest entry in Activision's long-running shooter franchise will be titled Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Infinity Ward released the very first official logo for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, following a teaser announcement last week.

The developer Infinity Ward announced the news on Thursday in tweets that showed the logo and the title of the next game in the series.

The game's official Twitter account also posted a brief teaser video, which offers little more than an aesthetic tease.  However, the video briefly shows the logo for Task Force 141, the international spec ops unit that served as the principal protagonists of the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 released in 2009.

The upcoming title is a sequel to 2019’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. The 2019 Modern Warfare is Infinity Ward's reinvention of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare sub-brand that began in 2007. Activision has also stated that the 2019 Modern Warfare has been the most successful Call of Duty release ever.

Activision Blizzard formally unveiled the Modern Warfare 2 sequel and Warzone 2 in February.  A total of 11 separate studios are supposedly developing Modern Warfare 2 with Infinity Ward assuming the lead.

Call of Duty's annual release cycle appears to be coming to an end with Modern Warfare 2. The release date for Call of Duty, which the developers had scheduled for 2023 has reportedly been moved forward to 2024. As previously reported, Call of Duty developers have expressed an interest in moving away from the annual release plan.

Activision will also release a new Warzone game, a free-to-play shooter with battle royale aspects, in 2022. The original Call of Duty: Warzone was released in March 2020 as part of the season 2 expansion for Modern Warfare 2.
