Breaking Bad Creator Pitched Open World Video Game Adaptation

Breaking Bad, otherwise known as the meth-heavy TV phenomenon, has been resurrected in a recent episode of creator Vince Gilligan's “Inside the Gilliverse” podcast.

Although many years have passed since the closure of the universally loved Breaking Bad series, ongoing talks about it have managed to keep the brand somewhat relevant. Something that has kept the ship afloat, of course, is the idea of a video game adaptation eventually coming to fruition.

For years, Gilligan and the show's writers have toyed with the idea of porting the Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad universe over to consoles. Although there are, in fact, a number of smaller titles that mostly cover the Android and iOS market, there has never really been a full-on adaptation.

As it turns out, though, Vince Gilligan has, in fact, pitched an idea for a video game. And although his knowledge of video games isn't exactly up to scratch, it's clear that the idea has been explored. According to Gilligan, a Breaking Bad game would involve a Grand Theft Auto-like open world setting, with presumably the characters from both series fleshing out its borders. So, basically a Rockstar-led project.

Rockstar, Take Notes…

“I'm not much of a video game player, but how can you not know Grand Theft Auto,” Gilligan said during a recent podcast. “I remember saying to the guys, that are off running Apple now, who said yes originally to Breaking Bad, ‘Who owns Grand Theft Auto? Can't you have a module, can there be a Breaking Bad [game]?' [It] still makes sense to me! That never came to fruition. There have been quite a few attempts at video games, some of them kind of made it to market. We tried to do a VR experience with the Sony PlayStation VR headset. We did a mobile game that lasted for a little while.”

Of course, you should still take the idea of a Breaking Bad video game coming out with a grain of salt. Although Gilligan has clearly stated an interest in exploring such an avenue, we're still no closer to getting such a thing. With that, you probably shouldn't hold your breath.
