So without further ado, enjoy our list of the Best Indie Games on PlayStation Plus (April 2023).
We begin by starting off our list with an entry that has a distinct aesthetic style. Bugsnax is a game in which you capture creatures called Bugsnax. Players will awaken on a mysterious island called Snaktooth, and they have to capture the creatures in order to solve the mysteries around them. Players will quickly be immersed in this charming land, and there is plenty to do within the game itself. There are a hundred Bugsnax to capture. This means that players who will want to complete the game fully have plenty of content to complete.
This in no way feels like a chore, however, and remains fun and exciting through the entirety of the game's runtime. This means that players can relax and take the game at their own pace. There are plenty of different environments to enjoy throughout the game as well, which does a great job of varying the setting quite a bit. This keeps the game from feeling too similar as you go through collecting creatures. All in all, Bugsnax is a wonderfully charming title that more people should certainly check out, as this game is certainly one of the best PlayStation Plus indie games on offer.
4. Dead Cells
First of all, Dead Cells is an incredibly challenging game. This is a game that will truly test your mettle against its levels and mechanics. However, this is precisely what makes the game so fun to play in the first place. This is a game that will require your time and full attention in order to succeed. The general vibe of the game and presentation are top-notch and provide an excellent backdrop for players to go along their journey. The game's combat is rather brutal at times but always fair, with a difficult balance to strike.
Added to this is the fact that the game itself pulls heavily from the Metroidvania genre, so fans should already know what they are in for. This is a game that requires the player to learn as they go through it. Everything from enemy attack patterns to locations and more can all be used by the player to get a leg up in an unforgiving world. Lastly, this makes for a game that encourages players to explore its world and find any advantage they can. To close, Dead Cells is one of the best indie games in the PlayStation Plus library.
3. Overcooked 2
Overcooked! As a series has been phenomenal. For those who don't know, these games are somewhat cartoony affairs that challenge the player with cooking multiple kinds of cuisines, all while dealing with the game's excellent level design. Players will have to contend with moving levels, levels with ice, and generally just spaces that make cooking as difficult as possible. This is where the genius of the game comes in, as you are constantly striving for perfection throughout your run time. In addition, the game offers a healthy cooperative element in which you can bring friends along for the ride.
Overcooked 2 takes the formula put forth by the original Overcooked! And ramps it up considerably. Firstly, this is great because it brings a new level of challenge and depth to the gameplay. Secondly, players having to work together is great for player cohesion and is simply a great time to enjoy. Lastly, this game shows that even without the budgets of AAA gaming, you can still make an experience so worthwhile. In short, Overcooked 2 is one of the best indie games that you can play through the power of PlayStation Plus.
We begin this entry by saying that Celeste is a game that players should no doubt experience. This platformer has a narrative emphasis that few games can hold up to. The story within this game is phenomenal, and the amount of content you get within the game is absolutely staggering. Described as an action platformer, this game will test your ability to jump and move through its various levels. These levels are all wrapped in a beautiful pixelated art style, making them pop on the screen.
The gameplay itself emphasizes movement and the avoidance of traps as you go throughout the game. But arguably, more important than the game's mechanics is the story it is attempting to tell. Players will have to face many fears and conquer things such as self-doubt in this title which deals with these issues very well. The writing team on this game definitely deserves tons of credit for the experience they created. That being said, Celeste is one of the indie games that you must play if you have a PlayStation Plus subscription.
