7 Best Alaska Sports Betting Sites (August 2022)

Updated on

Alaska is one of several US states that have no legalized and developed gambling industry. That, of course, doesn’t mean that the state will not eventually reach the stage where the authorities will allow it, but for the time being, this has not happened. Several previous attempts to bring laws and regulations that would allow different forms of betting on a state level have failed.

The biggest move to try to achieve this actually came directly from Governor Mike Dunleavy back in 2020. He stated that legalizing sports betting and lottery would be a good way to diversify the revenue that is coming to the state’s government. Apart from sports betting, Alaska was meant to get access to draw games, keno, instant games, and more. However, the attempt ended up being unsuccessful, and to this day, Alaska remains one of 5 states in the entire country that has no state lottery.

The future of sports betting in Alaska

Unfortunately for would-be gamblers in Alaska, the state is not expected to see the legalization of gambling locally anytime soon. The local lawmakers did not approve the Gov. Dunleavy’s bill. In fact, neither chamber of the state’s legislature moved. However, given that this was all back in 2020, which has been a rather chaotic year for the entire world, it remains unclear whether the lack of action comes due to the lawmakers’ opposition to all forms of gambling, some specific details of the bill, or simply because other issues took priority.

After all, Alaska does not have a single professional sports team, and the entire state has fewer than 800,000 residents. In other words, sports betting firms are likely not going to spend a fortune on developing sports betting in the state, so spending resources on legalizing it might be seen as unnecessary by the officials.

7 Best Offshore Sports Betting Sites for Alaska

1. Bovada

The first on our list is the Bovada sportsbook and casino, which emerged in 2011. For the first five years of operation, the platform held the Kahnawake Gambling Commission’s license, but in 2016, it decided to give up on it after the Commission went through a policy change that Bovada did not approve of. For the last six years, it has operated without a license, but that still did not affect its quality or performance.

Its sportsbook offers a variety of popular payment methods, and the ability to bet on all kinds of big sports franchises, such as the NBA, NFL, MLB, NCAA football, NCAA basketball, and NHL, among others. Apart from traditional currencies, it also accepts Bitcoin, and it features mobile availability. And, if bettors ever experience an issue or need any sort of help, they can contact customer support at any time via email, phone call, or live chat.

When is online sports betting going to launch in Alaska?

For the time being, it remains unclear when online sports betting might come to Alaska. The fact is that it cannot happen before online sports betting becomes legalized, so the bill needs to come first. As for when, or even if that will even happen simply remains unknown at this time.

Alaska is different from other states, given that it is the biggest one in terms of total land area, but it is also near the bottom when it comes to its population. The total land area is over 570,000 square miles, but very few people are spread across the state. Most of the state is just wilderness, consisting of mountains, rivers, lakes, and forests.

What this implies is that it would not make a lot of sense for any form of legalized gambling to be relegated to retail-only operations. It simply wouldn’t be profitable. However, the state would be able to generate much higher profits if it enabled sports betting for mobile devices, thus granting its citizens access to websites and apps that they can access from anywhere in the state.

Legal betting options in Alaska

For the moment, there are no legal sports betting options within Alaska’s borders. The state does not allow betting on things like horse racing, for example, so advance deposit wagering sites may not accept bets of this kind.

Furthermore, there are no local sports betting websites that can operate in the state legally, and that are allowed to accept bets from Alaskan gamblers.

Most popular sports to bet on in Alaska

Given how close Alaska is to Canada, and its cold climate, it is not surprising that hockey is one of the most popular sports in the state. With that being the case, NHL and other hockey-related bets would likely come in a significantly greater percentage than in other areas of the US.

Other than that, the other popular sports include the ones that are also popular in the rest of the US, including football, baseball, and basketball. However, one interesting thing regarding Alaska, specifically, would be if sportsbooks could legally offer bets on the biggest sporting event in the state — the Iditarod sled dog race.

Alaska and daily fantasy sports

Fantasy sports have been a major thing throughout the world, and while Alaska has not legalized daily fantasy sports, specifically, all of the major daily fantasy sports operators do accept bets from Alaska’s citizens.

Some of US states started looking into daily fantasy sports back in 2015, trying to determine whether it was truly a game of skill, or simply a method to skirt sports betting laws. However, Alaska was not among them. As a result, anyone in Alaska can enter real-money daily fantasy sports tournaments with leading operators to this day.

Is horse racing legal in Alaska?

Unfortunately for horse racing fans, no, it is not legal in Alaska. And neither is betting on horse racing, meaning that websites that use advance deposits wagering will not accept bets from Alaskan citizens under any circumstances, as that would be completely illegal.

Alaska sports betting timeline

As mentioned earlier, Alaska made its first big attempt to legalize sports betting in 2020, when Gov. Dunleavy introduced a bill that would legalize state lottery, among other things. Sports betting itself was introduced as a lottery game.

One particular line from the bill says that “The corporation may conduct lottery games through the use of any media, including electronic terminals, computers, and the internet,” indicating that Dunleavy understood that the state would require mobile betting in order to maximize its betting revenue.

Unfortunately, that is where it all ended, as the bill never progressed out of committee in either chamber.

Lloyd is passionate about online gambling, he lives and breathes blackjack and other table games, and he enjoys sports betting.
