Bovada sportsbook and casino emerged in 2011. For the last six years, it has operated without a license, but that still did not affect its quality or performance.

Its sportsbook offers a variety of popular payment methods, and the ability to bet on all kinds of big sports franchises, such as the NBA, NFL, MLB, NCAA football, NCAA basketball, and NHL, among others. Apart from traditional currencies, it also accepts Bitcoin, and it features mobile availability. The Future of Alabama Sports Betting

While Alabama did not have much success with legalizing and regulating gambling throughout the state, multiple attempts to do so indicate that the interest is still there and that it is eventually bound to succeed. Sports betting is legal in two states that share borders with Alabama, those being Tennessee and Mississippi. Tennessee has mobile-only sports betting, while Mississippi bettors need to place their bets in casinos, but while these may not be perfect conditions — betting is still available.

Another border state, Georgia, also attempted to pass mobile betting in 2021, all of which goes to show that this part of the country is trying really hard to enable betting, which will eventually likely result in success.

When will online sports betting launch in Alabama?

As mentioned earlier, Alabama has been trying to get sports betting legalized for quite some time now, but it did not have much luck so far. With that being the case, it is not possible to give a real timeline and predict when it might succeed. Chances are that it will succeed eventually, but whether it will be in a year, two years, ten years, or more, is hard to say.

For now, the state features only three tribal casinos that are allowed to operate, and it is among the last US states to not even have a lottery. Its best bet now is to offer sports betting via an open mobile market with untethered operators, like Tennessee.

Most popular sports to bet on in Alabama

When Alabama gets sports betting available, it is highly unlikely that there will be a shortage of sports bettors interested in placing bets on all the games that sportsbooks will have to offer. It will be critical for the state to allow bettors to wager on college athletics within the state, as Alabama doesn’t have any professional sports teams. However, it still has plenty of major schools with multiple teams.

There are two major programs in the state, including the Auburn Tigers and the Alabama Crimson Tide, both of which have very strong NCAA football teams. Either one of those could make a run to the College Football Playoff, and if it happens, the amount of betting that would follow could even rival some of the major NFL playoff games.

Alabama Sports Betting History

Finally, let’s take a look at the state’s betting history, which is, arguably, not very long.

In 2019, the country made an attempt to bring HB 315, a bill that aimed to legalize mobile sports betting, but which failed in committee. However, the local bettors at least got access to daily fantasy sports this same year, after a bill legalized the games. Previously, the state’s attorney general made the games illegal three years prior, in 2016.

The following year, 2020, saw another bill, HB 336, which was fairly similar to the one from 2019. It was created to legalize mobile sports betting, as well as certain retail outlets licensed to take bets. According to the bill, sports betting revenue would have been taxed at 10%.

Finally, in 2021, an entire package of bills aimed at launching a state lottery, establishing sportsbooks, and even enabling casinos managed to pass the Senate. But, as mentioned earlier, it failed to reach the House floor.

Lloyd is passionate about online gambling, he lives and breathes blackjack and other table games, and he enjoys sports betting.
