Five worst video games of 2022, ranked

We are mid-way through the year, and things don't seem to be getting any better for video gamers. Most titles released this year seemed to have potential but ended up being the biggest flops. Despite some games having exciting and promising trailers, the gameplay, graphics, and over-hyped micro transition structure have led to a disappointing turn. So without much further ado, here are the five terrible video games you probably should stay clear of.

5. Babylon's Fall

Worst Video Games of 2022

Developed by Platinum Games and published by Square Enix, Babylon's Fall is a role-playing, hack and slash action-filled game released in 2022. Using a third-person perspective, players take on the role of a sentinel to scale an enormous tower. The game's aim is to reach the top of the tower while completing a series of quests. You can play the game in a single mode or through a cooperative multiplayer of four players.

Although the game features an immersive combat system, it contains various unnecessary features that make it remarkably unremarkable. For starters, the game's storyline is not compelling, not to mention the lack of visual appeal of its characters and terrible textures. The game fails to correctly capture the painted-canvas art design, making it appear bland and uninteresting. Furthermore, the poor lighting and the appallingly developed NPCs contribute to the game's overall lousy structure.

4. Postal 4: No Regrets

Ironically, Postal 4: No Regrets is full of regrets. The game is a sequel to the Postal 2 series after Postal 3 received a load of negative reviews from players and critics. Developed and published by Running with Scissors, the first-person shooter game is meant to be comedic. The game takes on peculiar gameplay as it allows players to set people on fire, pee on them, take down a mountain of poop with a hose and even flip off NPCs after using a rocket launcher on them.

Postal 4's gameplay is a follow-up to Postal 2, where the Postal Guy moves to a new town and his car gets stolen. The Dude has to perform a series of events with the ultimate goal of getting his car back. The tasks are menial, ranging from changing a light bulb to launching Americans across the Mexican border.

We believe that Postal 4: No Regerts is a satirical critique of capitalism. However, the jokes are poorly written and outdated. Furthermore, the game experiences frequent crashes and glitches. Even with a powerful PC, you can still experience various technical issues.

3. Skatebird

A modern-age skating game developed by American studio Glass Bottom Games, Skatebird is simply a bird on a skateboard. The game borrows its concept from Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. The main difference is that the player controls a bird, not a human character. Skatebird's story revolves around a bird whose owner gave up on skating, and the bird takes up skateboarding to cheer them up.

Skatebird's gameplay involves skating around the different environments and bumping into NPCs or, in this case, NPBs for challenges. The game doesn't indicate which fellow bird can assign a mission to you. This can be tedious since you'll have to skate for a while to find the next challenge. The challenges are pretty straightforward; however, the game's camera control may make it a tad difficult to complete. Furthermore, the bird may get stuck, and it could be hard to get out of it. This makes the game appear sluggish, and you may be tempted to restart the game to get out of the tight squeeze.

While the game's mechanics are not heavy on skateboarding, Skatebird has an excellent concept, however poorly executed.  Aside from the above, Skatebird is a cute arcade game with a relaxing soundtrack. However, due to its unrefined nature and somewhat poor mechanics, it can be pretty much irritating to play for any average gamer.

2. Chocobo GP

 worst video games

Chocobo GP is a modern-age Final Fantasy spin-off and a sequel to the 1999 PlayStation game Chocobo Racing. Developed by Arika and published by Square Enix, Chocobo GP is a classic kart race with both single-player and multiplayer modes. The game's objective is for players to race through the tracks ahead of their opponents. Players can use various tactics, such as power-slide drifts for speed boosts and smooth turns.

Although the game stands out as a classic kart racing series, the several microtransactions and lack of variety downplay its gameplay. The game is not comparable to the Mario Kart series, especially with the latter's appalling monetization. The game uses three currencies, which can be a throw-off for most players. You'd expect the game to be an easy pick-up and play race kart game. However, that's not the case. The game uses three currencies that unlock various levels and characters. While some currencies can be earned by playing the game, the Mythril currency is a premium currency, which you can buy from the Switch eShop. Furthermore, the game's Prize pass is uninteresting and uninspired.

1. The Waylanders

Five worst video games of 2022, ranked

Hitting our number one spot on the list is The Waylanders, a role-playing game developed by Spanish team Gato Studio. The game uses a third-person shooter perspective, but players can also switch to a top-down perspective thanks to the isometric camera view. The Waylanders features 12 different real-time combat modes and includes a tactical pause that the player can use to regroup. In the game, players can take on the role of an explorer, guardian, warrior, healer, or sorcerer.

The game also allows players to choose their race or origin. While playing the game, players can learn a lot about pre-historic Christianity and Celtic folklore. Besides that, the game lacks personality and many technical hitches. For starters, you may notice some cutscenes and translations are missing. Also, you'll likely experience a never-ending list of bugs and errors midway through. Notably, the Waylanders feature an exciting story and concept, but maybe the developers need to take more time to refine it. The game's peculiar controls and dull combat can be tweaked to deliver a better gaming experience. Until then, the Waylanders remain a gem that needs more polishing.
