Rule the World

If we're being honest, we've all imagined what the world would be like if we were leading it. And, to be honest, we think we'd be pretty good at it. However, the chances of us actually obtaining that authority are slim to none. That's why we'd turn to the five games that let you rule the world to get a taste of that sensation because we'll likely never get it ourselves. But with these games, you can get pretty close, and as a bonus, you'll feel high and mighty afterward.

But ruling the world isn't always as simple and straightforward as it sounds. Believe it or not, ruling the world can cause a lot of stress and even some unruly consequences. Because what comes with unhinged power is blind arrogance. That is why you must approach every decision and move with caution. Because you never know when it will come back to bite you. However, one game on our list allows you to rule the world without consequence. Want to know what game that is? Then it's time to dive into the five video games that let you rule the world.

5. Cities: Skylines

Cities: Skylines - Release Trailer

We'll admit that Cities: Skylines doesn't allow you to rule the entire world, but rather a significant portion of it. After all, it is a city builder, but it is one of the most acclaimed in the genre. Cities: Skylines casts you as the mayor of a modern city, which may not sound original, but it really succeeds on the idea with highly intricate and detailed world-building gameplay. You must take care of everything, from naming districts and ordering policies in them, to managing traffic and even your own economic system.

That's just a taste of what the game has to offer, but it truly puts the world at your fingertips. With your sole goal being to create the most prosperous utopia known to man. That's why the game promotes the fact that “you're only limited by your imagination.” This is made even more true by the game's extensive modding system. It allows you to import your own creations into the game, as well as take your existing structures to previously unimagined heights. After all, the name “skylines” isn't a coincidence.

4. Democracy 4

Democracy 4 Release Trailer

We did say early on that ruling the world can have serious consequences. And Democracy 4 is a good example of what we're talking about. In the game, you assume the role of a country's leader, of which you have complete control. So you can govern the country however you see fit. Which you do by making policies, and enacting laws. All while dealing with press reports, coalition governments, corruption – you get the idea.

After all, you're running for re-election, which will be determined by your popularity among the people of your country. That is why it is critical to address not only basic policies and laws, but also current political issues such as police body cameras, civil rights issues, and others. Democracy 4 does not grant you the ability to rule the entire world, but it does grant you the ability to rule a single country. Which is more than enough to give you the unhinged power we crave from games that let you rule the world.

3. Sid Meier's Civilization V

Civilization V Trailer

The Sid Meier's Civilizations series is likely familiar to you. It's one of the longest-running games in the world-building genre and is well-known for its concept of building a civilization from the ground up and developing it throughout time. While dealing with other AI-run civilizations that want to conquer and take over. Which, as you may have guessed, comes with a slew of challenges, such as where you want to focus your research and what you want your civilizations to be known for.

Each move you make will have its own set of advantages and disadvantages, but if you want to rule the world, you must be able to make difficult decisions. For example, what city-states do you want to form an alliance with and build trust in? And which ones do you want to steal, exploit, and tear apart from within? All of these options choices are at your disposal in Sid Meier's Civilization V. While we are aware of the sixth installment in the series, the fifth is by far the best and the one we recommend for the best experience in ruling the world.

That's why establishing you're dynasty and their connections are vital in the game's success, but also to ensure you have an heir to the throne. Because if you don't you effectively lose the game.
