Horror games serve as a must-play during the spooky season. Halloween is the perfect time to turn off the lights, hover around a dark television screen or monitor and simply get scared. Both of which are really fun experiences. Even within this niche of gaming titles, however, there exist games that serve their purpose a little better. With that being said, here are our picks for 5 Horror games that will get you in the Halloween Spirit.

5. Alien: Isolation

Alien: Isolation is an absolutely nerve-racking experience. Seeing players go through this game even indirectly is enough to scare most people. With a game so frightening that enjoying it even outside of the player's own experience can scare you, the feeling of dread within the game is very real. The game takes place on an abandoned spaceship where players must hide from the titular Alien. Crawling through vents running through any amount of the spaceship quickly turns verse tense. As the Alien AI is quite intelligent, many players will think they're safe. It is at this moment that the Alien will strike. Causing an immediate death and making the players start over.

Based on Ridley Scotts Alien franchise, the monster in this game is truly iconic. If players wish to deal with the anxiety-inducing experience, they are more than welcome to do so. It is even easier to enjoy this title as it is available on many platforms. With that being said, Alien: Isolation is one of the games that put isolationist horror back into video games. Because simply nothing is scarier than having everything stripped from you as Alien hunts you down.

4. Bloodborne

Bloodborne is a game that, through its grim and macabre aesthetic, can be absolutely terrifying. Whether it be through the grim, bleak streets of Yharnam or later levels, Bloodborne is absolutely unsettling. Taking place in a Victorian-styled era in which people became reliant on the blood of Old Gods, Bloodborne is a Lovecraftian masterpiece. While its lore is sparse, players may be too frightened to go seek it out faced with the monstrosities of the game. Coupled with the feeling of unease that comes from the environment is the grueling difficulty of the game.

As has become characteristic of the Souls series Bloodborne is hellaciously hard. Leaving many players who do not progress past a certain point. If you can grit your teeth and get through it, however, Bloodborne is a resoundingly rewarding experience. Once again proving developer From Software‘s knack for building grim game worlds, the land of Yharnam is certainly frighteningly fantastic. This, coupled with many other factors, makes it one of the  5 best horror games you can play to get you in the Halloween spirit.

3. Doki Doki Literature Club

Don't let the seemingly mundane name fool you Doki Doki Literature Club can be absolutely horrifying. With an anime-inspired aesthetic, the game is sure to be appealing to players initially. However, the game has quite a few dark twists that fans of shock horror will absolutely love to get squeamish and squeal over. This visual novel can get absolutely dark at times and quite unsettling to most players. There is also no barrier to entry to this title as it is also free-to-play.

With some of the content being rather violent or grotesque, it is even advised for some people who have a sensitivity to these things not to play. If you can stomach it, however, Doki Doki Literature Club will be a great time for your Halloween party. The game features many fourth wall breaks designed to mess with the players. This is used to great effect in tapping into the more psychological aspects of the game. Serving as one of the 5 Horror games that you can play. Doki Doki Literature Club is a shocking view of just how horrifying the visual novel genre of games can be.

2. The Evil Within 2

Video Game Flops That Deserve a Second Chance

Serving as a game that has rather different gameplay from other games on this list, The Evil Within 2 is a fantastically frightening game. While its predecessor, The Evil Within, didn't manage to quite hit the mark, The Evil Within 2 made many improvements to the first game. With the protagonist from the first game reprising his role, players of the first game will feel familiar with this game world. The main character Sebastian Castellanos uses a STEM device to connect himself to a different world. The writing within The Evil Within 2, however, is stellar for the genre of game that it is in.

The game draws from a lot of places. These inspirations became rather apparent as one plays through the game, from older horror movies to classic horror games as well. These influences are used to great effect to affect the atmosphere of the game, making it very dark, gritty, and disturbing. The cinematic-like sequences of the game and wonderfully designed boss battles make sure that The Evil Within 2 shines. All of these things combine to make it one of the 5 Horror games that surely will leave an impression on your Halloween.

1. Resident Evil: Village

Resident Evil: Village is seen by many as a return to the horror roots of the series. This title is a fantastic game to play either with friends or solo for more scares. The unsettling feeling of the game can be felt from the introduction of its story. Upon the story's opening, the player character has had their lives utterly ruined. It is then that the true horror of the game begins. Being in the titular village, the atmosphere of the setting is striking, to say the least. The game sees the Resident Evil series pushed in brave new directions.

The game has more fun with more action elements than its predecessor  Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. This should appeal to players of the older games in the series, such as Resident Evil 4. In much the same way that that game served to breathe fresh air into the series, so does Village. Being one of the 5 Horror games to play that will get you in the Halloween spirit, Resident Evil: Village is a must-play during this spooky season.
