5 Gaming World Records You Won’t Believe Are Real (2022)

To break world records, one must first devote a considerable amount of days, weeks, and perhaps even months to perfecting the task at hand. For some, this becomes a way of life, as well as a means for escaping the real world for a short while. And while we all pride ourselves on forging a legacy worth remembering, there are a select few who go above and beyond to secure a place in the very walls that bind us.

Sure enough, Guinness World Records has caught wind of thousands of impressive accomplishments over the years, most of which have been worth talking about to some extent. But then, there are five that we know about that bounce off the page more so than others, and we honestly can't get enough of them. So, if you, like us, enjoy celebrating milestones and achievement, then you'll probably find something to smile about with these following record-breakers.

5. World Record for Most Games

Records

In 2019, Antonio Monteiro of Richmond was clocked having over 20,000 video games stashed in his collection, making him an immediate record-breaker in the Guinness World Records. Of all the games he has collected since childhood, the tech guru has been able to complete the whole Xbox set, as well as the PlayStation, Wii, and Nintendo 64 library. And this is just the tip of the iceberg to an incredibly wealthy portfolio, with games dating all the way back to the Atari Lynx era.

“As unforgiving as most of the games in this generation were due to their limited saving/resuming capabilities, beating a game provided this incredible sensation of accomplishment, satisfaction, and happiness. This feeling created a bond with those games, to where I treasured them and wanted to keep them,” he told GWR. From all this, Monteiro claims that his favorite game of all time is Castlevania IV, which he himself claims to be a “masterpiece.”

4. Highest Xbox Gamerscore

Records

You may not believe it, but the race for the highest Xbox Gamerscore is as cutthroat as ever, with upwards of ten devoted gamers forever bidding for that place at the top of the food chain. For most, it's a novelty, and a perk for completing certain objectives in the games we play. But for a select few, it's a means to an end, and an actual way of life.

At the time of writing, Xbox user “RedmptionDenied” holds a Gamerscore of 3.25 million, making the account the highest-earning in all of the known Xbox network. This comes from a whopping 3,347 video games, most of which have been squeezed dry of all their content and post-launch DLC. This grand total also doubles the Guinness World Record of 1.7 million, a feat that was accomplished by “Stallion83” back in 2018. In fact, the current top ten record holders alone tally just over 2.6 million apiece, making the former champion a relatively small pawn on an oversized monopoly.

3. World's Largest Final Fantasy Collection

We do love ourselves a bit of Final Fantasy. Though, perhaps we don't idolize it quite as much as one particular fan, who's devoted an entire lifetime to collecting and displaying its memorabilia. 3,782 pieces of it, to be precise. And that's a figure that was tallied up back in 2017, so one can only assume that the collection has since doubled in size. Plus, with the fairly recent release of Final Fantasy VII Remake, it's likely Square Enix has put out a considerable amount of new merchandise since.

Tai-Ting Tseng of California achieved this record quite a ways back, and yet it remains a sight for sore eyes even to this day. From the plush toys to the cardboard cutouts, the resin statues to the life-sized replicas, Tseng has built one of the biggest tributes to Final Fantasy the world has ever seen. If only there were a flock of chocobo there to complete the ensemble, eh? Oh, wait.

2. World's Largest Pokémon Collection

Given the fact that Pokémon has traversed countless console generations and platforms, it comes as no surprise that some collectors favor its world to quench their habits. One fan in particular, believe it or not, has spent an entire life collecting items for her UK home, which currently holds a treasure trove of over 17,000 pieces.

Anyway, seeing as this feat was calculated back in 2016, it's likely the famous collector has since doubled its value. When speaking with GWR, Lisa Courtney mentioned taking frequent trips to Japan for the sole purpose of obtaining new collectibles. This borderline obsession has led to a nifty spot in the Guinness World Records, and rightfully so. Because let's face it, anyone who can spend upwards of hundreds of thousands on Pokémon merchandise should probably get their names in print.

1. Longest-Running Video Game Storyline

It's rare that a video game storyline will surpass the one-year milestone. What's also rare is a storyline finding enough content to flesh out twenty-plus years worth of twists, turns, and cliffhangers. But hey, Tekken managed to accomplish such a feat, if only just about. Although built on text-based cutscenes and redundant arcs, the fighting franchise did manage to break a record for being the longest-running series of all time.

What started out as a bog-standard arcade game eventually transitioned into a full-length storyline full of blossoming relationships and family conundrums. Since 1994, Bandai Namco has worked to develop a story out of the King of Iron First Tournament scenario, only to find itself adding small branches for each passing instalment. Cut to 2022, and the flourishing tree that is Tekken is bigger than ever, with branches stretching as far as the eye can see. Do we understand the story yet? I mean, kind of.
