5 Games You Should Play Before Marvel’s Midnight Suns

Updated on

They say good things often come in threes. This seems to be the case with Marvel, anyway, as the last few years have seen a cascade of superhero video games come to light, all of which have secured the fans' approval and opened the door to a number of well-deserved sequels. And now, we have Midnight Suns to look forward to, an action-adventure role-playing game that will feature a marvelous selection of familiar faces.

Of course, there's still a bit of time left before Midnight Suns hits the shelves and bears the torch for the Marvel brand. Therefore, if you're interested in tucking into a few old but gold superhero exploits before diving head first into the 2022 venture, then be sure to check out these five titles.

5. Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy - Official Reveal Trailer | PS5, PS4

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is many things, none of which are in any way monotonous or lackluster. In fact, it's a full-frontal combat-heavy role-playing game that sees you shifting genres faster than Vin Diesel cranks gears in a 1970 Dodge Charger. And although Telltale brought a similar story to the table around the same time, it was Square Enix that provided the whole shebang.

As Peter Quill, Star-Lord of the Milano, you are tasked with embarking on an epic intergalactic quest in search of an evil tyrant that looks to put the entire galaxy under a spell. Together, with the famous Guardians, you must traverse the stars and uncover clues and the necessary tools to fight back and restore peace to a brainwashed network. And with that, you can expect a ridiculous amount of whirlwind clashes, riveting story arcs, and heartwarming crossroads.

4. Marvel's Avengers

Marvel’s Avengers: A-Day | Official Trailer E3 2019

If you've ever fantasized about enrolling in The Avengers as an up-and-coming superhero, then the good news is, Marvel's Avengers lets you do just that. Once again taking part in an open-world story, you will switch between Marvel's household characters in a bid to wage war against the corrupt science-based corporation known as Advanced Idea Mechanics.

Marvel's Avengers takes place in a time that sees the world turning their backs on the beloved superheroes. After a mission goes wrong, the team disassemble and regrettably go into hiding, away from the public eye and into a voluntary hiatus. However, when Captain Marvel steps up to kick-start a new era of hope and prosperity into ignition, the team finds new ground to act on. With a common threat looming on the nearby horizon, the Avengers must reunite to reclaim what was rightfully theirs and drive back the opposing force.

3. Marvel Duel

MARVEL Duel Cinematic Trailer (Full Version)

Marvel Duel is a card-based combat game for Android and iOS. Similar to the upcoming Midnight Suns chapter, the primary objective is to build a quality deck fueled by some of the greatest characters in the Marvel roster. By forming an elite team of superheroes and villains, players can engage in enthralling battles against a network of multiplayer veterans.

Of course, while the main goal is to build a next-level deck and have it compete in a series of online tournaments, players can also claw for a variety of other perks to help boost their odds in battle. At its heart, though, it's a competitive card-based title, one that has managed to rake in millions of players from all over the globe and cement a place near the apex of best mobile games ever created.

2. XCOM: Enemy Unknown

XCOM: Enemy Unknown "Last Stand" E3 2012 Trailer

XCOM: Enemy Unknown is an award-winning turn-based tactical role-playing game by Fraxis, a firm best known for hit sagas such as Civilization, and the Sid Meier anthology. Like its distant cousins, XCOM narrows its scope on turn-based combat, as well as a series of city-building elements. Outside of the battlefield, players are invited to construct a base of operations, manage research, and juggle finances. Basically, it's a combination of the aforementioned cousins, only with a rich and engrossing sci-fi feel.

As the commander of an elite task force known as XCOM, you must wage war against an alien species. By being in charge of the cards from behind the scenes, you will develop a solid strategy, one that possesses the raw power to drive back an invasion. How you go about forming a revolutionary task force, though, is entirely up to you.

1. X-Men Origins: Wolverine

X-Men Origins: Wolverine - Gameplay Trailer HD

Say, what ever happened to X-Men? It seems to us that, in spite of the franchise having an existing fan base, video game developers haven't really been that interested in it. At least, not since the late noughties, when the series had a steady flow of beat 'em up chapters. But now, with Midnight Suns on the prowl, the classic mutants will finally get the attention they deserve. It's just a shame we have to glide back to over a decade ago to dig up its older games.

Of all the X-Men games that released a ways back, Origins: Wolverine was perhaps the most polished. Although a far cry from today's standards, it was still a thrilling experience, and one that we fondly remember even to this day. And so, if you happen to have an old PlayStation 3 knocking about, then be sure to relive a few iconic events before booting up Midnight Suns.
