5 Essential PS5 Games For Your Radar (2022)

There's no dancing around the fact that Sony is a reliable source for top-shelf exclusives, which is why so many resort to the PS5 to help pry the itch for quality video games. 2022, as with any year, has seen its admirable share of groundbreaking success, courtesy of the piles of triple-A releases that have stocked the physical and digital shelves. 2023, of course, is shaping up to conclude the same way: littered with fantastic jewels and stacks upon stacks of worthy indies to line the pockets.

Anyway, rounding back to the here and now, it seems only right that we talk about what's to come, and, more importantly, what's worth jotting down in the calendar. Therefore, if you're a proud owner of a PS5 and are in need of a few games to keep you ticking over, then allow us to list the absolute essentials. Here are, in our opinion, the five best upcoming PS5 games you should keep on your radar.

5. Hogwarts Legacy

Hogwarts Legacy - State of Play Official Gameplay Reveal | PS5, PS4

After a rather lengthy delay, Warner Bros. will finally put the wizarding world of Hogwarts Legacy out on PlayStation 5 and other consoles in Q4 2022. The open-world role-playing game will take you way back to before the events of the universally acclaimed Harry Potter series, and will instead have you tackling a new threat as a student of the beloved school of witchcraft and wizardry.

During a State of Play reveal, Hogwarts Legacy shared a number of features that players will be able to look forward to. On top of a whole lot of customization, players will also be able to explore a huge open-world region, attend classes, learn to fly, and earn house points through a wide selection of activities and side quests. Basically, it's everything the average Potterhead has wanted for the best part of a decade—only it's finally happening.

Hogwarts Legacy will launch in Q4 2022.

4. Saints Row

Saints Row Official Customization Trailer

After tearing away from the similarities that connected it with Grand Theft Auto, Saints Row went on to establish itself as a one of a kind franchise, complete with otherworldly superpowers, off-the-cuff one-liners, and mayhem-fueled antics. Now, the series will receive a massive overhaul, with Volition stepping in to reboot the Saints from the ground up.

Unlike previous entries in the original timeline, Saints Row will serve as an origin story of sorts, one that sees the player building the notorious gang from the remnants of a divided criminal underworld. Of course, there'll be an equal amount of mindless vandalism and atrocities—just on another canvas. But, with Volition returning to pilot the ship, fans should rest assured that the original charm will still be present and accounted for.

Saints Row will launch on August 23, 2022.

3. The Lord of the Rings: Gollum

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum - TGA 201: A Split Personality Cinematic Trailer | PS5, PS4

Ever since Middle-earth: Shadow of War wrapped back in 2017, we've been itching for another slice of Mordor. Or, to be fair, anything from Tolkien's infectious world of wonder. Fortunately, our wish was finally granted, as Gollum will now open a new door for PlayStation fans in September this year. And boy, from what we've caught so far, it's looking to be a real treat of an open-world chapter.

Gollum will explore the events leading up to The Lord of the Rings, a time before the One Ring engulfed the whole of Middle-earth in war and flames. As Sméagol, players will be able to make a series of decisions, all of which will make a direct impact on not only his personality, but his alter ego, Gollum.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will launch on September 1, 2022.

2. Gotham Knights

Gotham Knights - Official Court of Owls Story Trailer | DC FanDome 2021

Gotham Knights stems from a long line of incredibly popular Arkham games, all of which have gone on to inspire countless action-adventure hits. In Gotham Knights, players can expect a similar vibe, one that will be enveloped in a dramatic open-world Gotham City.

Batman is dead, and Gotham City has perished under a sinister belt of criminal activity. As a newcomer with a hunger for justice, you must formulate a plan to resurrect the hope sheathed deep within the heart of the city. Gotham Knights must rise if the once-balanced metropolis is to ever thrive again. The question is, are you ready to dismantle the odds that stack heavily against you for the greater good?

Gotham Knights will launch on October 25, 2022.

1. The Callisto Protocol

The Callisto Protocol - State of Play June 2022 Trailer | PS5 & PS4 Games

For what it's worth, we always thought The Callisto Protocol would've made a superb addition to the PUBG universe. A slightly odd one, perhaps, but who says you can't bolt survival horror to a well-rounded battle royale game? We respected the ambition, that's for sure—even though the game ended up being separated and becoming its own original world.

Of course, the main reason for our hype surrounding The Callisto Protocol comes down to the artists working on it. As it happens, it's the very minds that constructed Dead Space that will go on to erect the foundations for the space-themed survival horror chapter. And because of that, we're over the moon to see it hit PS5 consoles later this year. Plus, if we're going by reputation alone, then we can probably rest assured that it'll be an outstanding, albeit incredibly horrifying work of art. Consider us hooked!

The Callisto Protocol will launch on December 2, 2022.
