Trading cards have always been a fun way to collect and invest yourself in a hobby. Historically, trading cards didn't get much public attention until baseball cards began to make a rise in the early 20th century. This is when trading cards really began to branch out as companies began to see trading cards could hold value as vintage items and collectibles.

Nowadays there are thousands of different types of trading cards that span across sports, video games, films, TV series, comics, and well the list goe's on. It explains why most of us grew up with a phase of collecting some type of trading cards. For me, it was always Pokémon, and not to brag but I did have a pretty impressive collection. Regardless of whatever pop culture you're into, there are most likely trading cards for it.

2022 is an exciting year for tradings cards. There are a lot of expansions and new sets coming out that you might want to get your hands on early. That's why it's time to look at the five best trading card games of 2022.

5. 2022 Upper Deck Marvel Beginnings Volume 1

Starting in 2011, Marvel released its three-part Marvel Beginnings series of trading cards. The comic-based trading card series consisted of 540 cards but ultimately ended in 2012. Finally, after a decade the company is bringing its popular trading cards back as The Marvel Beginnings Volume 1 produced by Upper Deck.

The new volume of cards is a throwback to the inception of Marvel Comics back in 1939, up until the present day. So, you will have a lot of inspiration and style taken from the classic comics mixed in with this series. Those cards especially will hold rarity, consisting of Original Sketches, Comic Clippings, Creator Autographs, and First Appearance Cards. The only issue, we don't get any pictures of the cards just yet, so keep an eye out for when they release.

4. 2022 Upper Deck Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Trading Cards

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was a great take on the superhero presented in a flashy, comic-style animation. Almost every snapshot in that movie could be made into a trading card. Therefore, It only makes sense that the film expanded into beautifully crafted trading cards. Again in partnership with Upper DeckMarvel is coming out with the 2022 set of Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse Trading Cards.

You can not only collect special variants of Miles Morales but of all of his iterations from Gwen Stacy, Peter Parker, even Peter Porker has a trading card. That is just opening the door, as you can also grab different villains and various scenes from the movie. The base cards consist of variations such as Base/Parallels, Dimensions Collide, and Autographs/Relics. The base set holds 90 cards and is estimated to release on March 2, 2022.

3. Pokémon TCG: Pokémon GO Expansion!

We all know of Pokémon trading cards, I mean most of us grew up collecting them or at least played the original games. Even if you didn't I'd bet my top dollar you gave Pokémon Go a try when it took over the world. My point is, Pokémon is coming out with a brand new expansion of trading cards based solely on Pokémon GO.

An interview from Nintendo Life, with director Michael Sternka, notes, “We've been working with The Pokémon Company on this for a very long time. Can't wait to share more in the coming months!” mentions Sternka.

For now, the only sneak peeks we have into the new trading cards are their packaging. However, what we do know is that the new trading cards will be themed after the mobile game and are due to release in the summer of 2022.

2. Pokémon TCG: Sword & Shield—Brilliant Stars Expansion

The latest Installment to the Pokémon Trading Card Game is Sword & Shield-Brilliant Stars expansion. The new expansion will arrive on February 25, 2022, and will consist of over 170 different cards. With this release will come booster boxes and Elite Trainer Boxes that contain special Pokémon VSTAR Cards.

What's new to the trading card game is a gameplay mechanic known as Pokémon VSTAR. These Pokémon will have a special VSTAR ability or attack that can greatly influence the game. On top of that, they have especially high health, and damage attacks.

There are only four VSTAR Pokémon and can be found in special Sword & Shield—Brilliant Stars packs. Those four Pokémon are, Arceus VSTAR, Charizard VSTAR, Shaymin VSTAR, and Whimsicott VSTAR.

1. Magic: The Gathering – Streets of New Capenna

The biggest card game in the world, Magic: The Gathering is having an exciting new set called Streets of New Capenna. It is said to release in the second quarter of 2022, with full spoiler events coming soon. We don't know too much about the new set or what it will look like just yet, but we do know a little bit about the backstory.

Streets of New Capenna is based around the theme of crooks and gangsters in the Magic: The Gathering realm. So, expect an illustration style that is heavily inspired by film noir. There will be five crime families, each with their own abilities and playstyle, and represented by a specific tricolor set. Another key feature we know is that Elspeth Tirel holds a special connection to Capenna and will have a heavy influence on this plane. Those are all the specifics we know so far without getting into conspiracies.
