Regardless, all the games on this list have gotten our attention and that's with good reason. Visually, these games are the best-looking amongst their class of May releases. However, they are also the best-looking in other departments, of gameplay, storyline, and overall performance. Ready to find out just exactly why each game has earned its spot on our list of the best-looking games of May 2022? Well let's not wait, it's time to dive right in!

5. Kao the Kangaroo

Kao the Kangaroo - Announcement Trailer | PS5, PS4

Release date: May 27, 2022

Remember the Originals of Kao the Kangaroo? You probably don't, because the first games were released in 2003 and barely lasted three years. It was a short-lived career but it's never too late to make a comeback. This is exactly what Kao the Kangaroo is doing on May 27th. The game is getting a fair share of excitement and from the announcement trailer, you can begin to understand why. From what it shows, the game appears to be an extremely fun and light-hearted platformer that's just a clean scape visually.

You can't deny there are major Crash Bandicoot vibes stemming from this game, which is exactly what we're hoping for. The art style is telling of this, and if all goes to plan, the gameplay will be as well. As of right now, the game looks like it's on the right track with smooth gameplay, fun but challenging levels, and a host of adorable cartoon-style characters. It earned a spot on our list, so hears to hoping it plays just as good as it looks.

4. Source of Madness

Source of Madness | Release Date Trailer | May 11, 2022

Release Date: May 11, 2022

Source of Madness may not be a new game, but it will be a new experience for console players starting May 11th. The side-scroller was originally released back in September of 2021, for PC and Switch, and it didn't receive outstanding reviews, however, the majority were positive. For us, this is hands down one of the best-looking video games to come out in May 2022. Visually, Source of Madness is a flurry of colorful and enchanting visuals.

The in-game combat is definitely what brings the game to life visually, with the use of magic. The game's grim environment seems to be countered by its beautiful-looking aesthetic during fights, which really is what set's it over the top. Just to add to its theme, the world is highly inspired by a Lovecraftian style, and the game is dark action roguelike focused to match. Thanks to the game's flourishing combat and engrossing tale, Source of Madness has cast itself into the fourth spot for our best-looking games of May 2022.

3. Vampire: The Masquerade Swansong

Vampire: The Masquerade - Swansong - Gameplay Reveal Trailer | PS5, PS4

Release date: May 19, 2022

Tired of being the prey? Well, then it's a perfect time for Vampire: The Masquerade Swansong, because starting May 19th, you will be the predator. If you've had any taste of blood in Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodhunt, then you'll most likely want to dive into the game's narrative RPG counterpart. The whole concept of the game is hidden behind the name, Masquerade. Which really is the practice of hiding from humans, which is ultimately what you will have to do in Swansong.

You play as three Vampires, where you must feast on human blood in secrecy, but also need to pursue the storyline without giving up your identity. This is a crucial factor as the choices you make in the game could haunt you and will re-shape your story. With this in mind, Swansong appears to have the best-looking storyline out of all the games in May 2022. Hopefully, its Vampire esque inspiration will also deliver a great-looking game with it.

2. Sniper Elite 5

Sniper Elite 5 – Release Date Trailer

Release Date: May 26, 2022

Will sniping ever get old in video games? The answer is, as long as Sniper Elite is coming out with new games, then that's a resounding no. And with Sniper Elite 5 set to release at the end of May, you won't have any shortage of satisfying snipes to gawk at. When talking about the “best-looking games”, it's hard not to include a title where you get a slow-mo close up of your perfectly placed shot dissecting its way through your enemy, right before your very eyes.

Just with that knowledge alone you can sleep comfortably knowing Sniper Elite 5 will hands down be one of the best-looking games in May 2022. To add to this, the campaign and areas of the game are based on real-world locations. So, when trying to take your shot, your main concern will be to not get distracted by the beautiful scenery you're surrounded with.

1. Trek to Yomi

Trek to Yomi - Gameplay Trailer | PS5, PS4

Release Date: May 5, 2022

The number one game on our list is entirely in black and white, which is no small amount ironic. It's also for this reason, that Trek to Yomi is our number one pick for best looking game of May 2022. There really is no reason a game that's entirely in black and white should look as good and immersive as Trek to Yomi does. That's most likely because the game perfectly utilizes this theme to portray the game in such a captivating and striking persona. And from what we can tell so far, the side-scroller is going to be full of those moments.

The game isn't just a fun and quick hack and slash ride either. The combat is fairly advanced, with in-depth mechanics behind its sword fighting gameplay. Combat will take some considerable thought, and eliminating enemies will be a challenge.

One other aspect that has set Trek to Yomi as our number one, is that it also looks to have the best looking story of all the games on this list. The game's writers have commented on the extensive time and research that has gone into developing a story that's true to Japanese history and lore. So not only are you getting an original and great-looking game but a well-sought storyline with it. That is more than enough to give Trek to Yomi the number one seed.
