Uh oh, it’s that time of year again. January has fallen, and once again the world has started to refresh gym memberships as a way to get fit for the forthcoming summer. Although, in the gaming world, things are slightly different. Different, as in we’re happy to unearth Just Dance from an old box in the attic and thrash out some shapes to Lady Gaga’s greatest hits from the mid-2000s. That, as well as swing a few strapless Move controllers at our TV for a couple of hours in Beat Saber. Fitness? Pah. Completed it.
The point is: we don’t always need to refresh the odd gym membership when we can get our kicks from the comfort of our own homes. Plus, with most fitness video games practically giving themselves away these days on Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Now, it also means we can save a pretty penny on monthly memberships, too. Well, gym memberships, anyway. But what are the best fitness video games on the market right now? What’s worth clearing the room for and spending a solid morning with? Well, let’s take a look.
5. Until You Fall
Platforms: PlayStation, PC, and Oculus Quest
Unfortunately for us first-person shooter fans, there just isn’t a great deal of melee combat VR games on the market — especially ones that bundle in an entire fitness regime to help progress the story. Until You Fall, on the other hand, now that’s an exception. And believe me, it may look like your run-of-the-mill beat ’em up VR game, but boy, it can make you break a sweat without even pulling out the big guns.
Of course, the idea is relatively simple. You choose two weapons, one for each hand, and then you go to war against some pretty brutish foes. In order to take them down, you’ll have to use your entire body to duck, dip, dive and dodge as they counter your every attack. You will, of course, die. But when fitness is involved, I suppose death is the least of your problems. If anything, you should welcome it with the number of calories it’ll help you burn.
4. Just Dance 2022
Platforms: PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and Stadia
Of course, we just have to put a Just Dance entry on this list somewhere. No other game in the world will make you shed calories like this one, believe me. But what’s the difference between the 2022 edition and all the other instalments to the rhythm-based series? Well, technically nothing. It does of course boast more tracks and routines to conquer, but on the surface, it’s your everyday dancing gig.
But why should that matter, right? Just Dance 2022 is crammed full of diverse playlists and heart-pounding beats. And to be fair, no matter how old it gets, it is still hands down one of the best party games on the market. So, assemble your troupe, boot up your copy of Just Dance and get to work. Your body will thank you for it sooner or later!
3. Knockout League
Now, we’ve covered plenty of boxing games on here before — especially during the height of fitness VR gaming. But Knockout League, despite being one of the heaviest contenders of them all, has never really made it into the ring. Sure, it has spiraled through the radar once or twice, but we’ve never really given it the credit is rightfully deserved. So, let’s make amends with that now.
Knockout League is an arcade-style VR boxing game that allows for you to, well — punch an octopus in the face. And although that does seem like a pretty strong selling point for newcomers, the VR hit does also offer a whole lot more to tackle. Like, a pirate, for example. All in all, it’s a pretty fun game to chip away at for a few hours, even if it is only to slap the moustache off an octopus.
2. Ring Fit Adventure
It doesn’t matter where we go these days, because Ring Fit Adventure always seems to sneak back up on us and draw us back to its world of fitness. But then, being one of the best-selling video games of 2020, I suppose it has the right to tug a few collars here or there. But why the hype exactly? What does Ring Fit Adventure offer that no other game can dare to compete with? Well…a ring, for starters.
Boasting a whole bunch of vibrant levels and obstacles to overcome, Ring Fit Adventure transforms into your mentor, your training buddy, and your reason for wanting to become a better version of yourself. It’s addictive, it’s challenging, and it’ll keep the sweat dropping like bullets so long as you stay the course and power through its unforgiving world. Scared? You should be.
1. Zumba Burn It Up!
Zumba is known for being one of the most physically demanding forms of exercise in all of creation. Combining fast-paced beats with hyperactive dance routines, the global phenomenon has been helping both fitness fanatics and part-time gym goers get into shape for decades.
However, where you’d usually go to a physical zumba class and purchase a monthly subscription to kickstart your heart-pounding career, Zumba Burn It Up! basically serves it to you on a silver platter from home. With nothing but a Switch and a whole lot of open space, you too can join the revolution of dance. Its soundtrack is unlikely to blow you away — but you can expect a boatload of cardio to help mold you into shape.
